The possibilities if Cam is IR’d

New regimes pretty frequently start out by getting their own quarterback.

There's also the possibility that you get a coach for whom Newton doesn't fit his system.

I mean, it would make sense if we were picking top 5, but it's not happening. I don't think it's possible to trade up this year, there's two teams openly tanking for a quarterback, and so many others that are going to try and trade up because that's all they're missing. There's no one in free agency worth looking at, unless you think Winston can turn it around.

Sure eventually they will likely draft one.  Doesnt mean it happens immediately tho. They are still going to have to field a team in 2020 and pay a QB.  Cams contract is probably as tolerable as anyone they'd sign in the interim.

I'd say that's optimistic.

If we do wind up with a new regime next year, then realistically we're talkin about rebuilding.

You don't devote 20 million to a questionable player if you're rebuilding.

Of course you do. It's not even a gamble, it's just the right move seeing if your previous franchise quarterback is still playable.

Cap space doesn't win games. Cap room isn't an asset, it doesn't do anything for you.

There wont be a FA qb that costs less and isnt questionable.  In fact its likely they are questionable AND cost more.  And they probably wont be in a position to draft one thats ready to start day 1.

I don't think it's guaranteed that we sign a free agent.

They could try to see if Kyle Allen can become something, they could try to see what they have with the guy they drafted in the third round last year or they could just grab a guy in the first round this year in what's considered to be a deep quarterback draft.

Look, I get that a lot of people don't want this to happen, but if you look at it objectively the signs just aren't pointing to Newton returning right now.

Maybe he will, but it's pretty hard to deny that the odds are against him.

20 million lmao

bruh 20 million is nothing it today's NFL. cam's contract is a bargain. you would have to be STUPID to think that cutting him will bring any net benefit to the team. all you have then is a giant hole in the roster, at the most important position, without any replacement in sight. the panthers aren't going to be able to draft a quarterback this year, they've won too many games, free angency has no one worth looking at (unless we cut Cam then it would, actually a lot of teams like Chicago will go and throw a lot more than 20 million at the chance that Cam can play even to 2017 standards again).

this is funny, cause right now at the same time i'm reading other sites, chicago and tampa, and cam is looking like their dream off-season target. while we're talking about saving a small % of  the cap and rolling with a JAG until the panthers can tank enough to get a new qb, which will probably just be a new shiny JAG quarterback when you look at things historically. getting a winner is RARE, getting a legit quarterback is RARE, you can have 5 first round picks and in all likelyhood you're maybe going to hit on one being okay to good, and maybe every every other year you get a legit very good quaterback.

Draft picks are so fuggin over rated.  NBA figured that out years ago, the NFL is still trying to find a damn clue.

Barring a playoff run, RR is gone, shouldn't be dependent on Cam's health.  RR and Hurney stuck with choose to have Grier and Allen as their back up plan, they made that decision.  Choices should have consequences.

As for Cam, you put him on IR, sit him down and explain that his job is to come back 110% healthy.  For his own benefit and ours.  Cam's auditioning for a job next year.

Cam Newton will never play another meaningful game for the Panthers........I've held that position since the Buc game.

and after watching the 49er game ......Allen may not make it through the rest of this season with this oline.

How much fun do you think it will be watching the GB game now?

Take a look at some of the factors involved here:

Over thirty...

Twenty million dollar cap figure...

Hasn't been healthy in years...

Got injured this year in preseason on what was an average play...

Even if he gets healthy, major questions about his ability to stay healthy...

Valid questions about how much longer he can play...

...

If you were looking at all those factors on any other team, what would you expect them to do?

What would you advise that they should do?

Firstly don’t assume anything, evaluate his form on actual performance in training.  Can he make deep throws, how is his accuracy, how fast can he run?   Then and only then can you decide what to do.

That's pretty much what they did this past training camp and based on that, believed he was ready to go.

That belief didn't last long.
