Nick Wright: If Panthers move on from Cam, they’ll be drafting a QB in first round of 2021 draft

How so?

While I think wins/losses are a limited way to "evaluate" any player, it is worth noting that Kap's last season was 1-10, is 2nd to last season was 2-6 and nearly half of his 28 wins (compared to 30 losses) were in a single season.  Thus, he is not a good example of a bad QB with a good w/l record... just like The Golden Calf of Bristol wasn't... I also never thought Kap was as bad as some did.  The wheels really came off that SF team and I found it hard to blame him personally.

Kaepernick was benched for Gabbert. Sitting on the bench all pissy and then the cameras caught him and we know where that went. He became a Hero

Why s that funny? The foot this the first it's been hurt. Could be a random freak accident. Olsen came back from it and seems fine. The shoulder well his arm seemed fine in the preseason and in camp. This added year off could only help that cause. The smart money is to let cam play out that mesly 19 million and see what he has left in the tank.

The problem is that if the shoulder issue is something degenerative, it may not hold up for long.  It would allow him to look great in practice, but struggle as the season ticks into gear.  That is my concern.  Hope that is not the case and he is back next year..

He finished the season starting and started like 10 straight games to finish the season on a real shitty team.  He threw 16 TDs to only 4 ints in that time; not the greatest statistical season by any means but the whole "he sucks, benched for Gabbert" narrative is overstated. Gabbert didnt play better and Kap got his job back.

His arm was fine but then he was throwing bricks in week 1 and week 2. The foot injury came out of no where after week 2

The foot injury was their since the first preseason game week 3 on that sack. That's when it happen. He even stated it affected everything how he planted it hurt to even put pressure on it. He said he didn't want anyone to touch it or be around it. You dont think that effected his ability to throw step into passes?

Well if it is the exact same injury luck had and luck seemed to not wear down as the season went on I wouldn't bet that it is degenerative but that's just me guessing. The Panthers are in a really bad situation because their is no way to know for sure and it's a gamble either way. So what's the bigger gamble? Betting a former elite qb who can be a difference maker can return to for or betting on finding another starting difference maker In a year or that its kyle allen?

Teams have looked for decades to find the kind of talent Cam has like the dolphins and still not succeeded. If it's me, rather than take that risk I swallow the 19 million dollar pill because if he is back you dont need to go through that wild goose chase. You already have that part figured out. The bigger mystery is finding his replacement and it's long term success..

Nick Wright is, in my opinion, one of the best NFL pundits out there.  This morning he was saying that it would be a mistake for the Panthers to trade Cam Newton when he has at least 5 years left in the tank when healthy. His shoulder and foot injuries are not career ending and top QBs don’t grow on trees.  He also doesn’t think Allen is the long term answer for the franchise.

This assumes that Cam wants to stay, which he may not, but if he does, we should retain him in a prove it year and bite the bullet on $19 million.  Well worth the risk for the best QB we have ever had.

This is a fact. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in some fantasy land

I do not think we can assume that because Luck had a good season on the arm, Cam will too.  But that is also just me - we are both speculating there.  And I hope I am wrong, hah.  But I think the reason Cam was IRed is because the management knows there is more going on than the injured foot and knows regardless of its status he won't contribute this year.

I agree that it is a gamble to move on from any player like Cam.  But it has also been many years since Cam completed a season healthy and with a high level of play.  And it isn't just a matter of "keep Cam, or lose Cam."  Cam isn't going to want to play on a one year deal, and the Panthers may not want to extend him without a lot of caveats he may be unwilling to take.  Would I retain Cam on a team-friendly deal, whether it was his current contract (which IMO is pretty friendly overall) or a multi-year flexible extension with team options to get out?  Sure, but that isn't what Cam is likely to want to do, and he most definitely will draw interest in a trade.

as to teams looking for decades for a player like Cam... yeah, sure, that is true, but teams don't need a generational talent to compete at all. And when was Cam last "a player like Cam" for an extended period, anyway?

Look I hope I am wrong, I really do, because despite my vehement defense of our young backup QB, I also love Cam and wish he finished a very long and fruitful career here.  I just feel that the evidence is mounting something more is going on.

Allen is going to be here going forward given his current cost and the fact that going into next year he will have at least 14 games of starting experience. His value is high. Grier is cheap plain and simple. So it comes down to whether Cam is here or some other veteran takes his place. In any case there will be a real quarterback competition for the first time in a decade.

(i)  Tepper won't get rid of a Cam Newton that can be healthy again.

(ii)  Unfortunately, from what I understand they don't believe he can be healthy for any significant amount of time.

(i)  Agreed.

(ii)  Interesting.

So does this portend for a straight cut in your opinion?  Would some other team take on a broken down Cam that the Panthers have given up on?

The money line from this video of Cam is "one man's trash is another man's treasure"....  (nervous laughter upon delivery)

....kind of crazy foreshadowing given the times.

I think Cam can be healthy again. I hope Cam can be healthy again. I definitely don't want to see a healthy Cam Newton as a star elsewhere because I will have very, very, very, very, very hard feelings towards ownership about that.

Fuggin truth

Its unbelievable that people dont think a healthy cam is a better option than wadding into a blind "what ifs" with our current qb situation.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
