Insight into the new team model

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

After watching Tepper's video interview, rewatching it, reviewing it, checking everything that analysts wrote about it as well as the tweets that came from the impromptu media gathering that followed, the clearest statement that comes from it all is this:

Panthers owner David Tepper is not sticking with the model of one single executive being in charge of everything.

Tepper stated his belief that in the modern NFL, you need to have more than just a single decision maker involved if you're going to come to the best possible outcome. He also made clear that he's going to want his leads to work together in what sounds at least somewhat similar to the government's "separation of powers" principle.

If I were to speculate on how that's likely to split up, I'd say Marty Hurney is going to be concentrating on college scouting while whomever has the "COO" role will be in charge of things like contracts and (perhaps) free agency. We'll know more on that front once more information is forthcoming, but based on the current comments that's the general impression I get.

Couple of takeaways from that...

First off, Tepper isn't the first guy to use that model here. You may not like hearing this but that was actually the setup that original Panthers owner Jerry Richardson implemented when the team was first created. Richardson didn't believe in the solo GM model, though eventually he was talked into it when he made Marty Hurney the GM in 2002.

Second, let's say the lead guys can't come to an agreement. Marty being a more collaborative/compromising personality makes me think incidence of this might be minimal. Mind you, it's also possible that each guy will have clearly defined roles that won't be interwoven in any way so as to avoid such things.

Still, conflict in a high pressure, high ego situation is inevitable. And should that happen, who will settle those disputes?

That would be David Tepper, which effectively would put him in the category of "hands on" owner that reporters have long expected he would be.

So to sum it up, we're going back to an organizational structure that was preferred by Jerry Richardson, one that will be working under a hands on owner.

What could go wrong, right?

Seriously though, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm willing to wait and see how it works, and with whom it works once the new leadership roles are put in place.

I'm sure we'll all be watching closely to see how it goes.

When I hear "hands on", I think Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder. That scares me to death

David Tepper is the smartest owner in the NFL, and the richest as well

He made his money in the most competitive and analytics intensive profession in the world, unlike Snyder and Jones

Owners that meddle are an issue when they overestimate their capacity;  Tepper is the smartest guy in the room

That's all well and good when it comes to business. We'll see how it goes with the football aspect

Not sure where the major conflict zone would be in your assumption. Assuming Hurney is a College Scouting guy.

Though I would just listen to Teppers words on this and not assume opposite. The new guy would be under Hurney and be the potential next GM

Stated above: If their spheres of influence don't connect, not as much room for conflict.

Not completely out of the question though, especially if one guy thinks the other sucks at his job.

And yes, the new guy could be looked at as a successor / replacement. Hurney does only have one year left on his current contract. And while Tepper said he wanted to keep him, he didn't necessarily say that meant keeping him as GM.

Hedge fund isn't really like a business

I actually think the skillsets required to do what Tepper did are very similar to the analytical side of sports

If you want to compare him to other owners, don't use Snyder or Jones, but other hedge fund gurus

I think it's not necessarily a matter of business vs football.

It's personalities, and potentially, egos.

Tepper's certainly gonna bring in a guy he expects to work and play well with others, but that doesn't mean he will.

Hell, plenty of guys interview great then come in and make a lot of enemies, or just certain enemies.

He's also described by those who know him as someone who listens and gathers information before acting.

And also, kind of an a--hole when it comes to running his business.

Granted, he could be different now.

    • New season new teams. Everyone we face has improved their team as well. There's now a full season of tape on Canales's offense and Bryce running it. When they win 7 games I will become a believer.
    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
