Incredible... Wait, I meant "very good"

So here's the video where Panthers owner David Tepper talks to Bill Voth and praises Marty Hurney's draft evaluation skills (a little after 4:30 in).

And here's a link to a PFT discussion of yesterday's Panther News (sorry, can't embed) that includes a snippet from Tepper's presser given between 2 and 3pm yesterday. The clip appears around 8 minutes in.

Panthers expected to undergo big changes after firing Ron Rivera

For those too lazy to click a link, in this clip Tepper says the following:

Quote

Marty Hurney is one of the, uh, is a incredible, um... Well, let's not give him that kind of compliment. He's an, eh, he's a very good, um, uuummm, uh, evaluator of college talent. He is, you know, put in that position, he is very successful. You can look at the track record, it's a pretty successful track record. Uuummm, you know, in a modern organization, I think you need somebody else in that organization to complement that.

Wait, what?!  :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

Trust me, it's worth watching the clip just to see Mike Florio and Peter King's faces when they return from that clip :)

They follow up with speculation that the reorganization could leave Marty Hurney as "a glorified director of college scouting".

Interestingly enough, the Panthers took the video of that particular presser down and replaced it with the Voth interview later in the day. I'm guessing they didn't like how Tepper came off. If there is still video or a transcript of that full presser anywhere online, I can't find it. And trust me, I looked.

Albert Breer said something similar in his latest mailbag (link).

It’ll be interesting to see how Tepper beefs up the front office. The owner said in his statement that he planned to add a VP of football operations and an assistant GM. Then, in his video interview with the team web site, he indicated that some of the shuffling could lead to changing roles for those remaining in the building, including sitting GM Marty Hurney.

“There’s also new processes I want to bring in,” Tepper said. “I think the modern football organization needs a couple of people there. If I was looking in the future, if I’m looking at the manager in the future and looking up at who’s going to be there in the future and Marty is more senior, if I brought somebody else in, it could be a potential GM.”

Tepper also praised Hurney’s acumen on the college scouting side, and emphasized he saw a lot of merit in keeping him aboard—but it sure seems like he could be kept in a different capacity.

For the record, other analysts (Jonathan Jones, for example) are saying the same thing. King had a further theory, that being that perhaps Tepper doesn't quite know yet what he wants right now. If so, everything could still be up in the air.

Either way, as has been theorized previously, it sounds very much like the new front office structure is not going to include one guy who has final say on everything.

Unless, of course, you count David Tepper.

Funny how the Hurney critics are almost desperate to keep spinning this away from Hurney having any substantial role moving forward.

Would you like to tell me how any of what we're hearing says "Marty Hurney keeps full power"?

Hurney will get demoted to director of college scouting, and hopefully have a good staff under him to handle rounds 2-7. It’s either that or become unemployed if he’s not down for the demotion cuz he won’t get a gm job anywhere else. And we know this because we saw it happen already.

Didn't say that at all. I fully expect Tepper to share responsibility so that everyone gets to do what they are best at which is smart. But since yesterday you have posted several topics about it. You seemed somewhat triggered Hurney is still here and might still be the senior GM.

Thing is, the current staff likely only survives through the coming draft. Someone will be rebuilding that department in the months that follow.

At this point, how certain are we that task is gonna fall to Hurney?

I posted one thread for people to discuss speculation at the time of the announcements and another some hours later with my own analysis. That's exactly two on this topic. Other threads I've posted were on other topics.

Posted this one because I found the clip in question while reading something else and got a huge chuckle out of Tepper's gaffe :)

So this is the third topic and in those topics you posted numerous posts. So maybe 24 posts in 24 hours on this topic alone.  Yeah not an issue........

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
