So according to Tony Pauline and Ben Albreight we are interested and will VERY likely interview Matt Rhule to be our next head coach. Says in the article Rhule prefers the New York Giants job if it opens, but will defiantly hear what Tepper has to say. It says Panthers are officially interested. Im telling y'all I could definitely see us hiring a college guy.

I’ve never once felt the need to tell people that my greatest strength is how stupid I am. Mostly because being stupid isn’t a strength. And also mostly because that’s something I’d prefer keep to myself.

If you dont understand what he is saying then you don't need to tell us. It's quite evident.

I was being silly. I understand what he’s saying. Being willing to admit you don’t know everything is a trait people lack, particularly the further up the chain you go. Even me, own a business, supposed to be a master of my trade- there’s a ton of pressure to act and talk like I know everything there is to know about electrical work. But fact is I don’t. I ask questions and put my arrogance aside so I can better myself. Sometimes. Sometimes I made stupid decisions.

The beginning of knowledge is realizing you are devoid of it.

He was walking into a situation where he realized he had a lot to learn and owned it instead of being blind to it or pretending otherwise.

THIS is why he'll be different than Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder (Haslem as well).  He isn't so arrogant that he thinks he knows it all, and most important:  HE LISTENS.

Does anyone seriously think either Jerry or Snyder listen to anyone, or recognize they may not know everything?

He said he's hiring the coach first, then later the executive after input from the coach.

This seems ass backwards to me, but both Caserio and Colbert couldn't sign here until AFTER the 2020 draft. If Tepper isn't careful this could end up being a clusterfug.

It does seem ass backwards on the surface, at least until you really think about it.

1)  Tepper has made it clear that he sees the HC as a manager.  And one thing we can safely assume is that he knows the traits that make up a good manager.  So, as he is interviewing for the next HC, he'll be looking to see those traits, and then he'll likely listen to the football people (people within the organization as well as people outside it - he has mentioned talking to other owners and football insiders to get thoughts and advice) about the football specific attributes he's looking for.

2)  Despite everyone wanting Hurney gone and a new GM brought in, pretty much every qualified front office type is under contract through the draft.  Which means that Tepper cannot have any contact or make kind of change until then.  However, the top coaches will all be heavily pursued as soon as teams are allowed to talk to them, and the chances are very high that all of Tepper's preferred candidates will all be off the market long before the draft, which means that he will lose out on the best candidates.  So, in reality, while it is preferable to hire a GM and have him make the coaching hire, Tepper really has no choice but to do it backwards.

Unless he is doing so based on current communication with one or both. And why keeping Hurney on for the time being makes sense if Hurney is ok already ok with retiring or a different role.

Article is on Pro Football Network. If Mr. Scot could bring it up, its on Tony Pauline's twitter a little less than an hour ago. Pauline is the number 1 draft guy in my opinion in all the business.

Not familiar with how to embed a tweet?

Happy to help either way.

Here's the Panthers blurb from the linked article...

Quote

Allbright reports that the Panthers are another team interested in interviewing Rhule, and with owner Dave Tepper getting the chance to make his first hire, this would be an attractive option. But like the rest of the teams in play, will he be willing to give Rhule what he wants in terms of personnel power?

The last sentence is in reference to this one from earlier in the article.

However, Allbright reports that Rhule would want near-total authority.

Gotta admit, the idea of giving that kind of power to a college coach, or any first time NFL head coach for that matter, would make me really really gun shy.

Frankly, even hiring a coach that wants that kind of power so soon would raise a bit of a red flag.
