I'm thinking back again to Tepper's "I don't want to lose Marty" comments that didn't make any sense at the time.

I've wondered whether Marty might have been told that his role is being reduced and balked at the idea.

This scenario would make an awful lot of sense in this case.

The Giants are bad, but believe it or not they may not be looking for a new GM. There are rumors that they might not even be looking for a new head coach. Apparently the team's two owners are of different minds.

He's under contract for one more season only.

We've generally assumed that Hurney wanted to stay here. It is actually possible that he seems greener pastures elsewhere.
