Tepper's "habits of mind" and Rhule

One thing I learned about Rhule's coaching philosophy yesterday...

Watched a video of him (that I now can't find, it's probably posted here somewhere) where he talked about roster flexibility, and specifically position switches. Rhule said some players come to college having played a certain position for most of their lives but when the coaches look at them, they see them being better suited to another spot.

Now to be clear, that's not really unusual at the college level, and at that level it works. Rivera tried it here a couple of times too, but the results weren't so good.

Will Rhule try it here? Don't know. Flexibility isn't a bad thing, but by the time guys get to the NFL they're kind of rooted to their spots.

Guess we'll see.

You can't blame the development on Hurney or Gettleman. That would have been on RR and Co. All any GM can do is give them the raw putty to mold. If I bought you a container of putty and you just opened it and set it on the counter, it's not my fault it ended up dried out. You might be able to blame me if you tried to use it and it was absolute dogshit, however.

Yeah, I agree. My point was that Gettleman could find some overlooked guys. Hurney provided late round dogshit, and no one was here to develop either.

The Gettleman dumpster diving was probably his best aspect. He generally did a better job of filling emergency spots on the roster than Hurney has. If you could combine their respective good traits, they'd probably be a pretty good GM. Unfortunately, both of them are too filled with flaws to ever be considered good GM's.

Let's hope this next chapter leads to some more success.

The only problem with that is Marty Hurney making those late round picks. Marty is terrible at it. I actually hope Rhule has some say in those late round picks.

I think Tepper is injecting more group think on these and other points.  add a few more guys and new philosophy that may help turn  those decisions around. I’m not yet ready to throw out Daley or Christian Miller so hopefully Rhule can develop Marty’s past projects better.

More than anything, it seems that Rhule instills and values toughness in his players. I still believe we were (and have been) the softest team in the NFL for quite some time. Some of it was Rivera's molly-coddle approach to players, some of it was the "star player" culture that can develop after a Superb Owl run and big contracts get handed out.

Developing lower drafted and undrafted players used to be the hallmark of Rivera and Fox before them, but both seemed to lose the ability or desire to do so over time. And I think we might be able to look at a handful of late draft picks that never panned out and blame them not on Marty, but on a lack of coaching up and development. A lot of that lack of coaching isn't so much on the head coach, but on the poaching of assistants after deep play off runs or championship challenge seasons -- we saw it under Rivera (who wouldn't have loved to have retained McDermott as DC all these years?) and we saw it under Fox before him.

I know little about Rhule, but I like his spirit and resume. I'm always leery of that jump from college to pro in head coaching positions, but now he's our guy and I hope he lives up to the challenge. It will surely be the biggest one in his career so far.
