Irrelevant.

Based on that criteria, Clemson should have lost last year to Alabama.  Better team is the better team, the conference they come from is mostly irrlevant.

Yep, Clemson should of lost every year when the entered the CFP based on that logic.

Instead, they have the most wins and championships in the CFP era

and Clemson, Ohio St and Bama will be the 3 favored teams to return next year

Bottom line is Clemson played a superior opponent, who's been tested all season playing ranked teams.  Clemson is very talented, but when you're playing in the ACC, you're not going to get tested like you would the SEC.  Not pitting conferences against each other, just saying that LSU was ready for a test, Clemson's first test was 2 weeks ago.

And Clemson passed that test. Let's not forget they also survived an OT game against UNC and before you laugh at UNC's W-L record, realize that every game they lost was a one possession game.

Forget conferences. LSU was just the best team in college football this year and they would've been regardless of the conference they played in. Hell, Joe Burrow may have had 100 TDs in the Big 12 or Pac 12 and I'm only partially joking.

You might be right on the 100 TDs.

on a neutral field? 3 games? I'd say LSU probably wins 2 of 3.

I don't think the conferences they play in really alters that.  Just a matter of which team is having a good day and how you matchup vs your opponent.

I mean that narrative? of LSU was ready because of the SEC and Clemson wasn't because of the ACC? is a narrative that has been trotted out for the last 5 conservatives years entering the CFP.   It is proven untrue by Clemson's success in the CFP the last 5 years.

But does Clemson have a better chance to make the title game because they play in the ACC?

Two ways to look at it. It might be easier to go undefeated, but they don't get a mulligan. If they don't go undefeated they don't get in. The #1 overall seed this year was a HUGE deal. With all due respect to OU, it seemed pretty obvious to me that LSU, Clemson and OSU were head and shoulders above the rest of the pack.

You have been a solid voice of reason in this thread and its hard to argue against most of what you say. Well done being a quality contributor here.

yes and no.  Depends on the year.  This year isn’t representative of every year of the past and future.

I mean I can cherry pick a Alabama year that was a relative cakewalk too.

But Clemson could in theory go undefeated and not make it.  They were 3rd as undefeated defending champs.  So it frankly can work against them as much as helps.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
