No, the division winner thing hurts more than this did. Doubt we will see a 7-8-1 team make the playoffs again.

2019 Steelers 8-8, Rams 9-7

2018 Steelers 9-6-1 Vikings 8-7-1

2017 Ravens 9-7 Lions 9-7

2016 Titans 9-7 Bucs 9-7

2015 Jets 10-6 Falcons 8-8 (Texans in at 9-7)

2014 Chiefs 9-7 49ers 8-8 (Panthers in at 7-8-1)

2013 Ravens 8-8 Cardinals 10-6 (packers  in at 8-7-1)

2012 Steelers 8-8 Bears 10-6

2011 Titans 9-7 Bears 8-8 (Broncos in at 8-8)

2010 Chargers 9-7 Giants 10-6 (Seahawks in at 7-9)

You already occasionally get an 8-8 or even sub .500 team in. The playoffs ought to reward teams who did well during the season.

While I see the argument for 8-8 I don't for 10-6.

There's just no point.  Those outliers would have absolutely no chance of making it to the super bowl anyway.  We almost always know the teams that are going to be the contenders by week 8 every year.  There are a few surprises here and there but the seasons play out quite predictably.  Adding a third wildcard is pointless.  That team would get destroyed
