Norman for example is a bit of a nutter and that did effect his contract talks. Would not being able to keep a guy not because of want but because the negotiations melted down effect the draft quality grade? That happened. How do you just give a positive to a guy with one good year when a guy like Luke had multiple probowl years for this team. No way those are equal value or representation of good/bad drafted prospect.

I think it would be cool to see that kind of depth in this discussion but it's also why it's dumbed down to manageable and in this case I think we just disagree.

Fair and agree that the undertaking would be fairly difficult.  With the amount of data that is already collected I'm surprised there is not already an index (probably not one everyone would agree with and it would definitely have holes) to gauge the picks. 

Personally, I try to handicap a player's draft position and then go from there.  I look at that and games played/games started and go from there.  Based on stats the average corne rback's career in the NFL is 2.94 years (I think the overall avg is 3+).  J No spent 4 years with the Panthers which is higher.  He also played in 53 and started 38.  So at a high level glance I perceive him as better than average.  Couple that with him being drafted in the 5th round (below average pick) means to me at first glance that he was overall an above average player for the organization and the pick was successful. Admittedly this is extremely high level and does not get down in the weeds like a true index should but it is the basis of the rule of thumb I try to use. 

This whole grading topic might be a good post draft thread and worth a good discussion that will undoubtedly lead to multiple arguments and bans.

Our record since he has taken over is a significant indicator of his job as a GM this time around, as we once again fail to fill the team with proper depth to make consistent playoff pushes. 

All in all, Hurney hasn't put together a winning team since 2008. Didn't have to go back a decade to prove he's not doing a fantastic job this time around, and I say that not necessarily hating every move he's made this time. 

You don't know all the factors that went into the debacle especially between 2009 and 2012 nor do I but I speculate that Richardson had a lot to do with screwing that up and Hurney was the fall guy. This time around is a much better judge of him as a GM now versus then. No one is argued that Hurney 1.0  didn't suck his last several years. The question is whether he learned from his mistakes and is doing better now. I think he has improved and others don't. But using decade old  data only tells you the past not the present. And the present is a best predictor of the future than the distant past.

  You’re correct. What matters is now. So what has he done since taking back over that shows improvement? 
 

  Drafting? 
 Free Agency? 
Signings? 
Right players for system? 
 

  From a playoff team to a dumpster fire in two years doesn’t seem to show improvement in any way, shape or form.

Two drafts in and we are in a complete rebuild.  If Hurney was that good at talent evaluation, should we be where we are now?  I know, but Cam, but Ron, but, but, but.....excuses.   If Hurney had a band it would be called '1st round Marty and the blind nut'.

Congrats, Hardy was ONE of TWO  nuts that blind squirrel Marty found on day 3 of any real consequence.  Hardy actually ended up being completely nuts.  That would be fine if he only had a few and not 13 drafts under his belt.
