Then how did he outplay former first rounders and highly-compensated free agent, former pro bowlers McCoy and Poe?

In 2/3 of the playing time they got?

THE ONLY reason Butler got playing time last year is because everybody was injured until it was only him and Gerald. He stepped up to the challenge. We never asked him to do that or be that. He got his opportunity, finally, and manned up. Drawing two blockers in the NFL is worth money. Yes he will get it regardless of where he is.

At his age and perceived upside I'd say he'll get a good/great offer from the Panthers. He may want out, don't know but we need multiple guys at that position and KK is getting longer in the tooth while Butler is still young athletic and not undersized.

 

How much is drawing two blockers and then getting destroyed by those blockers to the tune of 5+ ypc by anyone wearing football pads worth?

The dude managed to get himself a few sacks during a contract year, curiously the stat that seems to generate the most revenue at the negotiating table. Stopping the run, a less self centered dollars earning but no less important to team success skill, he was godawful at.

If he's getting doubled on the run he's doing his job, at that point someone else has to win their 1v1, or there should be a free defender based on the front that needs to make the play. 

You can't expect 300+ pounds, to regularly beat out 600+ pounds on a double team block, if that is the expectation some of you have it makes sense why you see no value. 

The 6 sacks means in the passing game he was winning his 1v1's, Irvin, McCoy, Burns when in, and GMC were all going to be game planned for first. More so than anything he showed he has the ability, and he's only 25. No one is saying break the bank, but a financially responsible extension makes sense IF it's an option.

My take on Butler has long been that he expected to be a starter when he was drafted, and then basically threw a long term hissy fit when he didn't become one.

I don't see a whole lot of value in keeping him other than that we're thin at the position.

Or the 6 sacks means he sold out against the run and left his teammates hanging going for sacks. The bottom line is he was part of a D line that got absolutely abused against the run and with McCoy and Poe on the same line, how often do you really think he was getting double teamed as the third DT the other team was most worried about?  Let's be real, I don't recall seeing Butler dealing with a lot of double teams last season. I DO recall seeing him get pushed off the line like it was a broken record. 

 

I would only be in favor of an extension if it was both modest and HEAVILY incentive laden. You only performed in your contract year? Okay, here's your "only performed in a contract year guy" contract. Take it or leave it.
