1998. I had a buddy of mine on the phone when we were picking. I was 17 at the time. We were both chanting "Randy Moss" over and over when the Panthers were on the clock at #14.

We took Jason Peter. Moss went 7 picks later to the Vikings.

We could have had the second greatest WR of all time.

Marty Hurney's first draft IIRC.

Pretty sure Jack Bushofsky and Dom Anile were still running the draft in 98.

I remember because one of them (Anile, I think) had promised Vonnie Holliday that if he was still on the board when we picked, he'd turn in the card and dance on the table

Hurney's first Draft was 2002. He joined the Panthers a few years before but wasn't made GM till later.

I was going to say the same thing.  It was Jags, then us, the Baltimore all got our picks in before the Vikings could. Leftwich, Gross and then Suggs if I remember correctly.  Still one of the crazies things I have seen on draft day.

Wow, now that I think about the players involved in that debacle...the very first team to turn in their card (the Jags) are the only team that didn't get a good player.  The Vikings, despite having egg on their face, took one of the leagues best DTs while he was in the league.

The Suggs pick came after the Vikings.  One thing I remember about Suggs and that draft is that he was supposed to be a "lock" to go to Arizona at #6.  They ended up trading that pick to pick up two 1st round picks from the Saints...and then blew those two 1st round picks.  Oops.
