I would go EDGE in the 2nd.

I dont think a CB in the 2nd will fix our secondary. I do feel like we have a better chance at fixing it with a better pass rush.

I wouldn’t cry, but I’m also not in love with any of the DE there. YGM looks interesting but I think Xaviar McKinney is a much better pick.

the reports said we were as high on Simmons as Brown,. Flipped a quarter basically so I would think McKinney would be an acceptable alternative.

MHS’s 2nd and 3rd Round big Board and bonus knowledge galore

(subject to change and it will at any given moment)

Of course, CB is now the obvious priority, so the big board will be based on that premise. Anyone ranked ahead of a CB is a player I would take in spite of our need at CB.  I will not include positions that I think we do not need, such as RB.  Other positions, such as WR or TE, have some good talent and depth, but might upgrade our situation, so that player is on the board, just lower than need positions.  All other picks are based on needs, just not necessarily immediate needs.  For example, you need a solid retirement, and that is important; but you also need to eat when you are hungry.  Careful planning should allow you to meet both needs.  Back to football—I did not list any DTs in this list, even though we could add one later.  I figured that one or two players not on this list will be drafted before we pick, and there are only 5 picks before we pick, it is reasonable to see a trade back here or us getting our guy. I smell a trade back—but if a DE is on the board, we probably take him.  My list:

1.      Jaylon Johnson, CB:  Playmaking CB that can ball.  Underrated, so he could drop to us.  If so, I take him.  I am higher on him than most, however, but I just think he is a #1 CB.  He will be picked earlier than most think (rated in the 40s).

2.      Xavier McKinney  S:  I am not one of the people who thinks all Bama DBs are bad, but you have to be careful.  I simply think that Boston/Burris are both borderline starters at best, and McKinney is a good value at 38 considering that he is the best S in this draft.

3.      Kristian Fulton, CB: With the defensive front, it is hard to gauge just how good Fulton is, but he seems like one of the top CBs left.  Many had him with a first round grade.

4.      AJ Epenesa, DE:  A bad combine may have dropped him, and I think this is a big boom/bust candidate, but his upside is tremendous and would serve us well—an 8 sack guy who can hold the edge---I would take that.

5.      Yeter Gross-Matos DE:  I do not see him dropping to us at 38 but if he does, change everything-- I like him as a 4-3 DE.

6.      Josh Jones, OT:  Later tape showed tremendous improvement than early on. Starter who would have been a first rounder last year or next season.  Victim of stellar T draft.  LT prospect.

7.      Lucas Niang OT:  Long arms and smart.  Athletic.  Go ahead and move Daley to G and develop Niang for a season and let him compete with Little for the LT job.

8.      Denzil Mims, WR:  I did not want to go here, but Mims in round 2 is a value.  Rhule might be pounding the table over Mims when he is there at 38.

9.      Trevon Diggs, CB:  Good zone CB, if that is what we are doing, bad tackler.

10.    Laviska Shenault Jr. WR.  Big, versatile WR with good results after the catch.  X WR.

11.   Jeremy Chinn, S:  I love his versatility, size, speed, ball hawking---a gem.  Marty, if you want to find a small school sleeper so you can feel smart, look to Southern Illinois—not Hickory.

12.   Grant Delpit, S:  I wanted to put him higher, based on reputation, but I watched some video and do not see him as a good fit—and I do not know what he would be fitting into (Defense).

13.   Zach Baun, OLB:  Versatile LB who might be best suited for a 3-4 if he stays outside, but he is a talent that can play many spots.  I am guessing that he goes early to a 3-4 team, but he is very smart and very athletic—MLB?  Because I think he would necessitate a position switch here, I probably do not touch this guy, but he is a good, smart player, and we like versatility.

How MHS sees the top of Round 2 going:

33.  Cincinnati:  A.J. Epenesa, EDGE, Iowa:   DE/Edge biggest need on Day 2.

34. Indianapolis:  Laviska Shenault Jr.  WR, Colorado:  Developmental QB (I am guessing Eason later) and WR biggest needs.  Getting Rivers some targets would be preferred.  Mims is an other option.

35.  Detroit: Ross Blacklock IDL, TCU.  This nearly HAS to be DT or DE.

36. NY Giants: Xavier McKinney  S, Alabama.  Will Gettlemen resist the best S in the draft?  Nope, but this could also be Delpit, but I think the value at S vs. the Giant needs is too real.

37. New England: Zach Braun, OLB, Wisconsin.  This pick should be QB or WR, but the Patriots have so much to trade up with, I expect they will get the BPA at a need position, and later trade up for Eason or Fromm.  This is difficult to predict because Belichick is going to be moving all over day 2 with trades.

38.  Carolina:  Yeter Gross-Matos, DE.  A solid second round choice that meets a need.  Why not go CB? I really wanted Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah but he played through a 2018 injury in 2019 and had shoulder surgery AFTER the combine.  That is likely to scare teams off—he could drop, and maybe this is too high for him for that reason.  Maybe we should take Fulton, Diggs, or Dantzler—not at 38:  If we trade back, we probably lose Gross-Moss.  Take Moss, then find a way back up into the late second round for that CB.  Trade the 3rd, 4th, and a 5th.  If we walked away with a CB, DT, and DE on days 1 and 2, I would call whatever happens with the second 5th, 6th, and 7th a win. Mims at WR is another option.

I love this board and your way of thinking! If we could land that other bookend DE and trade up for a falling CB that has number 1 potential, this defense might be better then anyone could have imagined before the draft. A safety next would be icing on the cake and if there was one I wouldn't be scared to trade up for him too. Also the way things appear to me is we need a nickel cb, could bring Ross back, but would love to see a young guy!

Diggs is a late bloomer that moved from WR but long, athletic and great size.  Great at press man.  Not perfect but clay to mold.

Well the way this and the last draft have gone...

If I like them, it’s assured we won’t pick and if I don’t like... well...

I won’t hate the Diggs pick... so we will see. I’ll just get upset if McKinney is there and then we choose Diggs Or Espenesa...

its assured now that’s what would happen ha

Johnson's shoulder surgery was deemed successful with a speedy and full recovery expected.  He will be ready for the season.   The shoulder surgery is well documented, but this entire time of the pre-draft his draft stock has steadily risen.

Yep, but he himself said in an interview yesterday that his agent told him that it "scared some teams away." (first part of the interview)

I would add, who measures his stock?  Scouts and GMs lie/smokescreen, websites speculate, etc. does stock actually rise after their final seasons and combine or does the speculation become more refined, causing us to adjust our boards?  I never understood how that happens,.

Regardless of aj’s combine you can’t pass up the opportunity of him, Burns, kk, and brown. I think it’s a crack dream if he makes it to us.

burris is a borderline starter and Boston is average to above so a could wait if needed but McKinney has too much potential to pass on

johnson I really like with the right coaching, we could pray the shoulder think drops him to the 3rd good news is the teams that got Cbs yesterday are unlikely to double dip.

also wouldn’t be mad with ygm, Fulton, blacklock, Or Antoine jr

A want to say one of the CBs, but Josh Jones is tempting.

Its not often that value seems to line up with a LT pick.  Might not be our biggest need this season but give it time.

Also, one of the WRs might be tempting.  Mims, Pitman, or Shenault.

I like our first pick a lot but at the same time it would be nice to have an extra second right now.

I’m totally down with Josh Jones. It might make me less mad we skipped on Wills,..

Mims seems awesome. Big, fast, great hands.

the corner I’m most intrigued with for this pick is Kristian Fulton. For the 3rd it’s Kvon Wallace.

i do like Delprit and Chinn for Safety if we don’t get McKinney.

    • That depends on where he's at because if you look at his first 3 seasons before he got sick he had 49 rec as a rookie followed by 56 and then his pro bowl season he had 103 rec. If he's somewhere between seasons 2 and 3 then that wouldn't be bad at all. We'll have to wait and see but from the few clips I've seen and the comments I've heard and read I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case. Personally, I'm really pulling for him and I think he's going to be the comeback player of the year.
    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
