Could The 2021 QB Class Rival 1983 And What It Means For The Panthers?

I really wish we'd have the opportunity to see Trey Lance play with a better supporting cast against better competition. Like Jordan Love this year, he's going to be the small school wildcard QB next year.

Meh imo you’re looking for certain traits when scouting QB’s and you can scout those traits regardless of who they’re playing.

Would it be nice? Sure but whatever

That would be ironic with Fields, for sure.  The neat thing with Teddy is he serves two purposes, to be that initial QB in Brady's system to get the ball rolling, firstly.  Secondly, if he doesn't prove to be more than an average starter, we can draft a rookie QB and have the luxury of Teddy mentoring the rookie in Brady's system and can sit the rook for a portion of the season or all of it.

Just out of curiosity what’s your definition of an average starter?

Besides Brock Purdy, Sam Ehlinger is a QB from the Big 12 that intrigues me.  I've seen little of the Longhorns, but the NFL seems to love QBs out of that conference because it is so pass-happy.  Ehlinger's stats are really good, he has nice size to him, so I could see him going in the 1st round if he continues his sharp play and avoids injury.

I live in Austin and watch all the UT games. Ehlinger is not going to be an NFL QB. He had excellent receivers to work with and relied a lot on his running ability. He might be a good backup or a Taysom Hill style gadget player.

Lol right. Elway, Kelly and Marino are all HoFers

The Broncos, Bills and Dolphins all knew that on draft day?  FYI, 2 of those HOFers don't have rings and Elway only got his at the a$$-end of his career...literally last 2 seasons.

Great question.  To me it would be at the very minimum have full command of the offense and no worse than 2:1 touchdown-to-INT ratio to start with.   Another minimum would be an effective game manager that could throw at least 200 yards per contest and lead the offense to 24 points or better a game.  Good pocket awareness is an essential trait as well.

I guess beyond that you would venture into above average status.

So if Teddy masters Brady's offense, manages not be sacked in the top of the League while averaging say, 230 yards passing and the offense is clicking off roughly 24 points a game, I'd say he's doing fairly well.  Taking in his TD-to-INT ratio into account, if Teddy ends up like 24-to-11 on the season, for example, that's pretty solid.

Now I did this off the top of my head and didn't do any hard statistical analysis, so bare that in mind.

Things could/will dramatically change throughout the year like every season's beginning/end projections. The way I currently see the field (And yes, it's stacked):

High 1st round:

1. Lawrence

2A. Fields

2B. Trey Lance

Already solid/Potential 1st/but need to have good follow-ups:

Brock Purdy

Tanner Morgan

Boom/Bust 1sr Round Potential (Need to make big strides but could rocket up boards):

Sam Ehlinger

Jamie Newman

Kyle Trask

Chase Brice

Complete Wildcard:

Kellen Mond

Really like Tanner Morgan.  He's been low key on a lot of scout radars, is really well developed technically, big time leader, and threads the needle.  Not the bomb arm but it's no noodle like a Fromm/Pennington.  Sneaky good deep ball.  Interested to see him lead Minn without Tyler Johnson...(Bateman is an absolute stud)

And you really think that there will be 3 future HOFer QBs in next year’s draft? You’d be lucky if there’s 1. Cam has done so much for the franchise and the NFL. I don’t even think that he will be a HOFer.

Who knows how many HOFers will be in next year's class?  We'll have to wait 20 years to see.  My comparison to the '83 class is the potential for 6 QBs to be drafted in round 1.  You were the one to bring up HOF statuses.  I was talking about the QB class talent and depth next draft.

I say those top 5 goes first round almost certainly minus some awful season this year.  Will someone like Newman sneak in there to make it six picks?  That's what is going to be interesting to see.

It also depends on who's at the top of the draft too, right? If a team like MIA or CIN is there, no need for a QB by them. Also, each of LT, WR, LB and CB have generational talents at the top of their respective position group. Would a team pass on a Sewell, Chase or Parsons if their current QB is decent... NYJ/NYG?

It is a ridiculously loaded QB class and appears to be on par with the Darnold-Mayfield-Rosen-Allen from a potential/hype stadpoint. We shall see if it lives up to '83.

I think it certainly can....but I also think next year's top-10 is littered with insanely talented, franchise-altering prospects from 1-10.
