OLB/SS Franklin, Chinn and the BIG NICKEL

We used the big nickle or buffalo nickle, as Ron called it, starting back in 2013 I think.  Collin Jones played nickle. It actually worked pretty well until he had to go up against little quick guys or he had to play man.

It's not about if you have a corner or a safety out there in you nickel package.  It's how good the corner or safety is and how he matches up with there receivers.  I think the Giants started it in 2011 when they won the super bowl.  It can work really well.  It just depends on the personnel.

See above post.

We have literally never been consistently successful with the concept of buffalo nickel @Moo Daeng idk what illusional fandom world you live in.

Colin Jones is a glorified special teamer on every NFL roster and we drafted Shaq to play that hybrid role and he has been so lackluster at it we had to square peg round hole him into OLB, which he is slightly above average at.

I don’t understand why you guys think we have had any sort of sustained success running this concept.

Yeah you don't know much about football do you.  The giants actually won the super bowl doing it and the Eagles did it alot a couple of years ago and beat the Patriots.  It can be done and has been you just to have the right kind of players.  What we did in the past really holds no relevance because we will not be using the same players.

Just because you don't like it does not mean that it does not work

@Raideraholic I heard that Cferrell was backup status.

C Ferrell will be the starting RDE , and has looked like he has improved the most from last season.Added 13 pounds of muscle( now 275) .   C Ferrell much stronger, and faster this year.    He will move inside occasionally ( DT) on passing downs.     Arden Key would probably be the second player that has seen to make the biggest improvement.

I think everyone agrees we are going to see some 3 safety looks but what I'm really curious to see is what front we run those looks out of.

They ran a lot of 3-3-5 at Baylor, and had great success with it.

I know Rhule claimed we are going to be a 4 man front but I fully expect us to run 3-3-5 also.

If your considering Burns part of the LBs because I understand what you’re saying but our strongest personnel seems to be Burns YG/Weather and KK with Brown. I see us running 4-3 primarily to keep out playmakers on the field.

You can run 3-3-5 with pretty much the same personnel

D-line: Short-Brown-YGM

LBs: Burns-Shaq-Carter

S: Chinn-Burris-Boston

CB: Pride-Jackson

    • 100%.  In his heart, he absolutely thought he’d have Stroud. What he may have promised will never be known, but I can’t imagine him taking the gig unless he would be allowed to get ‘his guy’. When BY was the pick and day 1 of camp concluded, Frank went in to ‘I’m too old for this ish’ mode.  To me, His comments show that he holds no ill will with Bryce, but he is less than enamored with the org.
    • That’s not true at all. We’ve made some bad decisions, yes, but overall we absolutely are not doing what you stated since Dan took over. I agree with you with Fitt tho.   Last year we heavily invested in OL and this year in DL. A mix of vet proven and young potential. Over those 2 years have also slowly built up the WR room. Those are long term foundational type moves. Assume the DL pans out as well as the OL did, you now start adding tier 2 pieces such as LB, S, and TE.
    • True, but on the flip side we didn’t know if TMac would be there at 8. You gotta roll with guesses at some point and then adapt as things change. Let’s see what Morgan does
