Baldy’s Breakdown

Ron would have said missed opportunities about 500 times after this game.

Bridgewater played it conservative at moments when aggression had worked out on some plays. Bears were very aggressive on defense and it burned them a few times.

First INT, Bears defender got to Robby Anderson before the ball did. Could have been called PI, just like the one that was called back.

Bears defenders have their hands all over Panthers receivers in the end zone on the Bridgewater scramble play. Not sure if that is called holding if Bridgewater throws the ball.

Maybe this will help shed some light on our red zone issues for some of you.

As mentioned yesterday, this Bears defense is legit.

We have been having issues in the red zone all season outside of one game. Remember the Chargers game? Repeated trips in to kick field goals. It’s not been a one game issue. However, this is a good breakdown of things that happened yesterday.

Smothering defense often involves pushing the envelope on the rules these days... especially with holding/illegal contact.... you see a lot of stuff past five yards.

Remember the piss poor route concepts down in the red zone during that Chargers game?

Yes, this is one game but a lot of the same issues are happening down in the red zone each week. Joe Brady’s red zone play calling deserves a lot of the criticism.

I’m really not in favor of giving up much if anything for Njoku but he’s a proven threat down in the red zone.

No doubt, that first trip into the red zone, I knew they were different from any other team I've watched this season.  The way they swarmed, beat us to the corner, finished with force, and just took everything away...  that defense is for real.

I told one of my friends it was absolutely amazing the way they played that read option at the goalline with Fuller on Bridgewater, considering I hadn't recalled us running any read option the first 5 games.  They played it like it was already a staple of our offense.

Was a hell of a one on one tackle especially for a corner. Bridgewater is no burner or anything but he does have some legit shake to him at times. It was just an impressive stop by Fuller. Fuller actually had a really good game.

If he’s truly available and they would take a fifth I’d do it in a heart beat. We need a big body in the red zone more than anything on offense and then I think we would be able to score with anyone.

He wants out and they did sign Hooper this past off season, I’m guessing they’ll take whatever they can get to avoid another headache

    • They are the least of Your worries, people on the team want to win.  You have to allow for a winning culture to have an opportunity, if you are the person responsible for creating it.
    • Do you honestly believe this is a team that will even be in contention for a playoff spot this year? To me, if you're not at minimum a genuine contender to make the playoffs, every win you get is a meaningless win in the end.  This is the NFL, it's not peewee league where you just want to win a few games and have fun, you want to get into the playoffs and have a shot at making a SB run. We haven't had a winning season in how many years?   Does "enjoying" a small handful of wins every year really make for an enjoyable season for you? I said it months ago and I'll say it forever, I don't care about winning or losing this year, as we don't have a playoff caliber roster yet and I'm a realist about where we are as a franchise.  I'd enjoy watching the games so much more if the team and Bryce in particular were just showing marked improvement, even if it came in losses.   Because THAT would give me hope for the future of the franchise and the direction we're going. Bryce was complete garbage in Week 1, in Week 2 he was terrible until the Cardinals went into super soft prevent defense and then collapsed gain when the game was in reach, and he was a serviceable game manager today, but didn't make any throws that any college QB couldn't make. This game was a perfect chance to let Bryce go out there and play loose because of the lead, just let him be himself and see if it sparks his college self.  But instead, we went unbelievably conservative with the play calling to help ensure the win, when actual wins and losses are the least of our worries this year, it's figuring out what Bryce can be (fans may be decided, but the team obviously has not yet). I don't want to make the playoffs every few years, I want to contend for SBs. I just don't get anything out of 6-11 type of seasons anymore, they're way more frustrating on the whole to be able to actually enjoy the few wins just because our shitty team got a win for a change.
