So what exactly does Marty Hurney do?

Hurney decides who's in the Scouting department.

That, plus a lot of Hurney's biggest mistakes have been times when he ignored the scouting department and went on a hunch of his own.

Yes. I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at?

Basically, that all the spin in the world isn't going to make him a good GM.

Oh he’s definitely not. I just like looking at the staff and seeing who was part of his cohort. They are also a part of it. I’m so ready for someone new in this dept. What I’m saying is that it’s not just his draft days and FA but the staff going out, issuing player reports, etc.

not going to find a Hurney apologist in Sax lol. The dude is the squirrel of a furry crew. We need at least a bear.

I'm sure Marty Hurney has several roles, albeit with far less absolute control than he had in 2019, but definitely his most important is as the team shield.

Bad draft pick or free agent signing? Hurney had his fingers all over that one!

Overpaid a veteran on their contract extension? Hurney can't help himself!

Fail to negotiate an extension to an important piece? Hurney can't get it done.

Whether intentional or not (and Tepper is a smart guy, so you have to consider that it is) it's a brilliant move by Tepper. He knew Rhule's first year would have its bumps, because a) our roster was dismantled with tons of dead cap and b) that's been the case for all Rhule rebuilds. But you've already demonstrated a huge committment to Rhule. How do you get the fans to stay excited and get behind the new regime despite a 3rd straight losing year?

Well you get a half dozen people to chip away at Marty's role and slowly establish the new regime. BUT you leave him in place to be the scapegoat for every bad outcome. Then when his contract is over, you cut him loose to the riotous cheers of the fans who believe we have officially turned a new leaf and thrown out the last rotten apple, making our future so bright. Interest in the 2021 season will be at the highest it has been in years, regardless of whether or not much has actually changed within the front office.

Why not?

Comp Picks.  Cap Space.

I'm not calling him a bad player, but not calling his signing "great" either.  Would have preferred to build vs. try to throw poo against the wall this season and hope something stuck.

Nailed it. This isn’t a Hurney thing. Rhule wants and has total control. He doesn’t want ANY GM who is going to have control of the roster. Or Andrew Berry would probably be the GM right now. Tepper gave him 9M/yr. He’s not going to make him go with someone else’s vision of team building.

The last decision that Hurney made was Shaqs contract. Everything since then, good or bad, is on Rhule.

    • Yeah, that fits with our current HC and his nonsense. IDGAF about the religiosity BS if it isn't rooted in some sort of scammy nonsense(see Rhule, Matt). Canales does smell like that kind of guy.
    • I think Bryce is here because of Morgan and Tepper. Morgan took the job under the condition that Bryce was the guy.  If than was the genius that he's been made out to be after this offseason, then nothing with Bryce, Dalton and Plummer makes any sense unless it was being directed from elsewhere. Tepper has also made it known publicly that he was throught the building giving his opinion vocally even though he's backed out of day to day operations, which is another way of saying, listen to what I'm saying or else.  Dalton was washed after last year. In no world did it make any sense to give him a 1 year contract, much less a 2 year. And Plummer, he was so bad last year he didn't belong anywhere near a football field again but we brought him back one more time. Then we bring in Hooker and White and let the trade deadline go by with QB play that is not only abysmal, but that actually below backup level in many statistical categories.  The only logical conclusion I can draw is Bryce was protected this season from any competition at all and Dalton was kept to be backup because he could never be a threat based on last year's play, which was confirmed by this year's play.  Everything that has been done from the trade, drafting Bryce, Mingo, Brooks, Sanders, Lewis, Corbitt, Hunt, Moton extension, Mitchell, Etienne, XL, TMac, all of it, has been to reinforce, double, triple, quadruple down on a guy who's first year performance, if judged in a vacuum, would have gotten him cut from most NFL squads based on mechanics alone.  Frank saw it and it's why he was fired. He didn't want him and didn't even try to build a game plan around him. Canales can't build a game plan around him. Defenses stack 8 or 9 in the box and dare him to throw and Sunday is what we got.  This is Tepper's ego in full force. It's the only true explanation for what we've seen the past 3 years. This is a man who refuses to admit he was wrong.
    • Small sample size since I'm pretty sure this is from this year. Burrow wasn't looking phenomenal in his only full game but I'm sure would have bounced back.
