FYI: Haven't heard if Dodds has actually accepted or not.

He declined the Browns request last offseason because he felt like he wasn't ready.

Dodds can afford to be picky. The sheer number of candidates he'd have to compete with could conceivably turn him off.

I'm starting to wonder if they are actually looking to fill more than one position.

I mean, I guess it's not impossible. But we might run into the same issue we had last year where other teams blocked us because we weren't giving that person roster control.

I think the team has 1 or 2 primary targets, but they are simply doing due diligence, and also there's probably a little smoke in there as well.  By throwing such a wide net, it's hard to tell who we may be targeting, so it's less likely another team senses our plan and jumps us for the guy we want.

I doubt we actually do full interviews with all of those guys.  They may do some initial zoom interviews since it's so convenient, but real targeted in-person interviews will be very limited.  Candidates from playoff teams may be at a disadvantage here since they can't do in-person interviews until their team's season is over. By that time, some of the prime openings may be filled.

From Person's latest Athletic article

(posted prior to the news about Kelly and Ossenfort)

Casting a wide net

Evaluating the quarterback position will fall on Rhule and whomever the Panthers hire to replace Marty Hurney, who was fired late last month. The search process has begun in earnest, with at least nine candidates identified by The Athletic or confirmed after other reports.

It’s a long list — in part because of the ease of interviewing candidates on Zoom calls. Plus, the Panthers sending notices to teams that they’re interested in talking to one of their personnel executives doesn’t mean all nine will get interviews.

The targets come from winning organizations: Seven work in personnel with teams that made the playoffs, and the other two have multiple Super Bowl rings. The known candidates are:

• Former Giants GM Jerry Reese

• Patriots player personnel director Nick Caserio

• Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen

• Browns vice president of football operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

• Saints assistant GM of college personnel Jeff Ireland

• 49ers VP of player personnel Adam Peters

• Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds

• Chiefs assistant director of player personnel Ryan Poles

• Chiefs director of football administration Brandt Tilis

Rhule has a background with Peters, whom he coached when he was a graduate assistant at UCLA, and is said to be familiar with Dodds, as well. Ireland and Rhule share a Baylor background: Ireland, the former Dolphins’ GM, was a Bears kicker from 1988-91.

Schoen was a Panthers scout from 2001-08 and has been with Brandon Beane, his former colleague in Carolina, in Buffalo since 2017. Tilis is credited with helping structure Patrick Mahomes’ $500 million mega-deal in Kansas City.

One internal candidate the Panthers could consider is director of player negotiations Samir Suleiman, a veteran salary cap manager who joined the Panthers last year. Suleiman, who played at James Madison in the 1990s, came to Carolina from Pittsburgh, where David Tepper was a part-owner before buying the Panthers.

Yeah. Not sure what all of the titles actually mean, so didn't know if Assistant GM, for example, could be offered to any of them.

If you interviewed them for a higher job, then offered them a lesser job, chances are both the league and the Players Association would call foul (not to mention their current employer).
