I think one potential pathway for Jones is to take a top tackle at 8, e.g. Slater, and then hope Jones slides in the 1st round and trade up from our 2nd round pick to take him. Obviously this requires him to slide more than predicted which is the biggest gamble but it hasn't been unheard of for a qb to slide towards the end of the 1st when people had them mocked in the top 10, especially one with those question marks. You might jump up to pick 24 or so if he's there, give up our 2nd, 4th and next year's 2nd maybe. Resign Moton, get an interior lineman on day 3 and the line is looking a lot better. Jones probably doesn't last that long but I think if we're counting on him to turn around this franchise, we have to hope he does or the chances of him fulfilling that don't look as good.

I was not high on jones a few weeks ago, and i am still skeptical, but you are right--we need to take Jones + a T and use free agency to upgrade the OL at G (and resign Moton.

I had an OL coach from the Univ of So Carolina talk (back when Charlie Strong was the DC)  to me during a coaching conference at Myrtle beach several years ago and I never forgot 1 comment.  "You can hide 1 bad OL, but you cannot hide 2."  For years I wondered exactly what he meant, so I assume that he means you can call plays away from the bad OL in critical situations, you can help with a FB or TE, etc.

Having said that, we had 2 bad OL last year on the left side-but we were better when Okung was in the game.  Reed was terrible--giving up A gap--etc.

I don't think Jacksonville is going to be very willing to give up Minshew considering how cheap his contract is. He's probably one of the best #2 QB's in the NFL.

I had the same thought.  In addition, they have 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders (4 picks in the top 46 picks) this year and a ton of cap room ($80m).  Is Urban Meyer the luckiest man on earth?  Opportunity sure seems to fall in his path.

There is some talk that Urban Meyer may want his college QB Alex Smith as a backup to Lawrence---if so, the door opens for Minshew.

I'd give up a couple of picks for him and try to get them to take Teddy. That is worth giving up a pick to get rid of that contract.

I realize that this is a panel of experts, but who decided that Mac Jones will not be a very good NFL QB?  I can name many with his skill set that have rings, mvps, and gold jackets.  77.4% completion, 42 TDs and 4 Ints, and 4500 yards in 13 games--the criticism?  He can't run and he had a good WR and good OL.

Then get him a good line.

Do not insult my intelligence by pretending to know squat.  You don't--nor do I.

And you title this, "The lesser of 2 evils" and give 5 options.  Nice.

Mac Jones is a joke.

He'd be worse than Jimmy Clausen and Chris Weinke combined.

At least I did not accuse Winston of "rapping" women and suggest signing Sam Donaldson.  And if the saying does not fit the situation, don't use it.  Because a "stitch in time saves nine," right?  In other words, it makes no sense.

Building an offensive line is not that easy to do, but to mock others after your display of intellectual wizardry is probably not your best move here.  Let me take you to school a bit here--

First of all, an OL is not an impossible task.  It can be done.  Building the OL vs. giving away 3 first rounders and 2 defensive studs or CMC and eating the entire cap is probably not the best way to build anything.  Why does the mobile Russell Wilson want out of Seattle?  No OL.  Watson wants out of Houston for generally the same reason, but he did not throw his teammates under the bus.  So the argument, "Since there is no way in hell you can have a good OL, get a QB who can run for his life" is not sound.

Yes, you can build a strong OL if you have 3 first rounders and some cap room and you do not need to address 2 holes on defense.  So don't hand me your assumptions and self-serving nonsense as facts- You draft a LT, put Daley at LG and draft or sign one later, you sign a RG and you re-sign Moton.  Did you know that most of the problems we had on the OL last year was due to the exploitation of 2 positions?  (LT and LG).  Fix that, add a TE, and yes, a smart, non mobile QB can be successful here.  Did you watch the Super Bowl or the 6 others Brady won?  Did you see Peyton and Eli win rings?  It can be done--if the qb is smart and can make quick decisions.  So please do not try to rap me with your intellect, Sam Donaldson.

Boy being a baby today and still on old poo I see.. I can admit my mistakes and not hold grudges like a girl when I get proven wrong .. I wish more ppl were like this instead of acting like a bitch everytime a person who beat you in a debate post. Lol

Building one and then keeping one healthy enough to not effect a non athletic QB is more of a chior then just getting a Athletic QB who can deal with the fact every thing might not be perfect in front of me.

All your Mac Jones stats are nice.. But doesn't change the fact he can't move and arm strength is avg.. Something we just said was Teddy's faults..

His arm is not elite,  but his intelligence (anticipation) and his release are elite.  That is how you average 350 yards per game and nearly 80% completion rate with an average to above average arm--which is a realistic assessment.  42 TDs and 4 interceptions.  If the ball was in the air that much, why did the defense not get to it?

Jones gets criticized for his arm strength because his release is so smooth and quick and he often takes something off the ball because timing is important.  Just like guys with 4.3 speed do not run 4.3 on the field--so much of the game is timing and finesse.  Jones is the third or even fourth QB in this draft, and he will be good with protection.

Oh and Winston wasn't just accused of this once or just accused at all.. The school and the Tallahassee police department got sued for it and Winston showed the same aggressive behavior toward a uber driver and got Suspended.  The pattern of behavior is clearly there.. sorry..

You are just a poster that provides me with comedy relief from my interactions with the serious posters who are not full of poo.  Thanks for the chuckles.

I think that ^ should be the takeaway for the OP...was super confused when first trying to decipher the thread at first.

I can't decide between Darnold, Mariotta, or Jones honestly.  It would be one of those 3 though, not another chance for Teddy or the Alex Smith option.

Read up on Jones---and Chris Simms, who has been spot on (Thanks Ricky Spanish) for the past few years, likes Jones.

I dismissed Jones--put him in the Trask category--but I started reading up. I am on board now.  Mariotta could be special in the right system--do not think he has been in the right system.  I am not sold on any USC qb--ever, so I am biased against Darnold.

    • Exactly. How would a chip in the ball know when a player was down? That element will absolutely still be a referee determination.
    • This is you, bringing Smith and Mills into the conversation about Bryce. This is you again relating those two to Bryce  You are absolutely relating these players, possibly the only one doing so, and then somehow calling other posters stupid about it. But don't let that pesky fact stop you - by all means, please continue to demean us/others in your responses.
