Albert Breer also has us taking Fields, believes Tepper is pushing for it.

I can't take the all in on Sam bottom of the NFL Darnold crowd serious.

It would be one thing if he were a proven veteran, but he's not.

He's been worse than Cam and Teddy who we've both brought in QBs for.

I'm not all in on Sam, but think he should get a chance to show what he can do with what should be better coaching and surrounding talent.

Or Darnold is bad enough to lead the Panthers to another top ten or better pick next year while they used this year's draft to improve other areas of the team. Then they use next year's pick on a QB.

I'm fine with that too, but in that case you wasted a 4th, and future 2nd/6th as well as possibly forgoing a franchise QB option in the meantime. That's all I'm saying. That trade and Sam Darnold's presence honestly shouldn't weigh into our action at #8. Darnold just kept us from being in a situation where we felt our hand was forced to do something stupid there.

He wasn't available for trade given what anyone was willing to offer. You really think they would've passed in #8 overall at that time?

We were negotiating this trade for weeks.

The Jets have said many times they weren't definite on trading Darnold.

Even after the trade was done, some (including GM Joe Douglas) were questioning whether they should have.

It's actually not guaranteed that either of them will be available at our pick.

That is what worries me. I feel draft picks are going to be passed around like playing cards tomorrow. I imagine we trade down in this scenario.

If you don't have a QB, you can't compete in the NFL.  Do we have one?

I agree with the FO, you can't have too many good quarterbacks on your roster.  We have spent years spending first round picks on guys we knew would be backups/role players at RB, LB, DL, etc.   If Sam ended up being a legit lotto ticket that Fields couldn't jump? That wouldn't actually be bad.  We would have real value on our roster.  To do what we wanted with.

The Panthers might. Won't know until he hits the field with the team.

Unlike other positions, teams only play on QB at a time. So, yeah, you can have too many good ones on the roster. If they are good enough to start, they are going to want to play. It happens in college all the time now. It would be worse in the NFL where millions are on the line.

Is it fair to judge the current FO by what previous regimes did?

I think that's a lot of us.

I haven't seen anyone definitively saying Darnold will be a star.

He's gone through new coaching once already. And the incoming staff at the Jets decided it was time to move on.

It's still up in the air as to how good our coaching staff is.

But I recall these same arguments being made last year with regard to Teddy who ended up looking like the same guy he's always been.

And to be fair, if the Panthers pass on a QB, if one is available, and Darnold doesn't work out the coaching staff better pray to high heaven the guys they passed on look just as bad.

Fields would be worth less than what Carolina spent on him. Drafting a QB is a terrible move for Carolina at this point. The only thing worse would be reaching for a bum like Jaycee Horn.

A better move than betting the franchise on Darnold which is what you're doing passing on a franchise QB prospect at #8.

It's not betting the franchise on Darnold. It's betting a year on Darnold and seeing what you have with him. If he's bad, Carolina will be right back in position to take a QB next year.

Based on the assumption that Darnold will be bad and Fields will be good.

As mentioned previously, you don't know if either of those things will be true.

    • I think Indiana will win it all but Miami should give them a much better fight than Oregon did.
    • When I tell people I was at that game, they usually say oh that’s so cool you had the experience. I call it soul crushing. Why? The weeks and months leading up to it were great, the team was fun to watch every week…some weeks the offense was unstoppable and carried the team (saints and giants road games), other times the defense carried the load (jaguars, tampa). Lots of back and forth games against good teams (Seattle and Indy). Good young players on the team, but the veteran leadership was incredible…from Cam, Olsen, Kalil and J Stew to Luke, TD, Norman, Tillman, Jared Allen, CJ. Role players like Fozzy Whitaker, Cotchery (he caught that MFer), Philly brown, Kyle love, AJ Klein, and so on.  The Friday before the nfc championship my wife and I after a few drinks said let’s see what prices look like for flights/accommodations and we got to talking about how much prices would increase if we waited until we found out if we would be in the big game. We said screw it, we are only out $200 if we have to cancel.  Of course we come out and just pulverized the cardinals in front of the most raucous crowd by far we’ve ever had. We had no idea what we would do for game tickets and then found out a neighbor who worked for the team could get us 2 for face value (each employee got two of their own for free, something cool that JR did).  But then the NFL mafia decided that the storyline of manning going out on top like Elway would give them more goodwill than a non traditional QB who didn’t connect with their target demo and the rest is history. I never have and never will watch that game again. I am just hoping I can see them win one in the 2nd half of my life.
