Draft day scenario - Could trading Burns be an option?

They certainly sent a message when they picked up Darnold's option and jumped on overpaid bad OL at the opening bell of free agency. Unfortunately, it wasn't the message they intended.

Just wait till you see what they give up for Jimmy G. or someone even worse.  I suppose they could convince Watson to come here for 50M a season after they give the Texans 3 1sts and half of our core players. That should do it. What a splash that would be right?

I've been predicting a move for Jimmy G for months if we go the vet route again. I'll honestly he pretty surprised if our QB isn't either Jimmy G or Kenny Pickett... and that's fuging horrifying.

Well send our 2023 1st for Jimmy G and draft Pickett, keep PJ as our 3rd string, convert darnold to HB/TE, and make Cam our slot receiver. That should give us enough QBs to make it to week 7 behind our line.

I think there would be teams willing to pay more to move up to get one of the young edge rushers rather than take Burns off our hands. If both kids are available they'd might be willing to deal with someone else to move up rather than be talked into dealing with us for Burns. There would be takers for Burns on Draft Night and maybe later if we picked up one of those guys but I'm not sure we'd get as much as the OP suggests. That said it still might be a viable option depending on how the board falls and what the offers are.

    • Nothing will change with the qb situation until Tepper is convinced Young is not viable. Until that point, it will be Young. During that time, any shortcomings of Young will be because he does not have the necessary supporting cast, and/or coaches are failing him with faulty schemes and defective gameplans.  So, until Tepper is out, Young is in.
    • Young is the kind of QB who will go as far as the team drags him 90% of the time. And once in a long while he'll explode and light the opposing team up. That is not anywhere near where we need to be as a team. What' worse is that we've won way too many games this season due to an extremely easy schedule. So we can't select a top QB in the draft, and a free agent QB is usually not the answer.  The Panthers fell victim to a long stretch of bad QBs coming out of college. Even if we had made different moves and selected any number of different QBs coming out, we still would have ended up with a bust most likely. Bryce is a bust. Tua is a bust. Zach Wilson? Yikes. Trey Lance. Justin Fields. Mac Jones. Kenny Picket. CJ Stroud. My point is that a lot of teams were devastated by this stretch of bad QBs coming out of college, but we were dumb enough to trade the farm for one of them.  The smart move? Tale the 2 first round picks from the Rams for Burns, and keep CMC. Sit tight. Whatever QB falls in your lap in the draft, take him. Then use the other two first round picks to build up the o-line on the cheap. This isn't Morning GMing. I said take the Rams deal at the time. We have not had a good GM ever in franchise history.  No more trading up for QBs. Clearly is a total guessing game. Stay put. Trade vets for draft picks and start the rebuilding process with a new GM and new coaches. Cut Bryce and bring him back on a vet min deal. Then cut him again for being trash. He's done here if I had any say.
    • He hasn't been the same since the head injury last year. I don't know if there are some lasting physical effects, or it's just mental. I hope he can get back to form, but I'm highly skeptical.
