Hornets Looking At Bringing Back Kemba Walker or Isaiah Thomas

He was brought in to replace Rozier bro using a lottery pick on LaMelo's backup would have been a waste.

There's no plan though. We paid both Rozier and Martin. Mitch is going down the same path that got him sent packing from the Lakers.

Yep, agree with all this. Really have no idea what our plan is with our young guys. We always seem to sign players over them.

Rozier’s new deal starts next year, and it’s a hefty deal to say the least.

The Hornets will probably let Oubre walk next year and slide Martin to SF to be the backup for whoever is manning that position… but once again, this year is another wasted year where the only minutes Bouknight are getting are in Greensboro.

In this case the Hornets let Bouknight 1.0 walk in FA so Bouknight 2.0 could do the same things.

That’s just being a poor manger of your assets though. At some point you have to get something for these players before letting them walk for nothing. Monk had the best year of his career last year and the Hornets have nothing to show for it. If they do the same with Bouknight then at some point the fans need to question what the plan is with our young guys.

I’m hoping the plan is to stop drafting high-volume, undersized 2-guards who won’t play defense, honestly.

They can coexist. Cody's a solid defender who can play 1-3 but he's not a shooter, he's depth. If he spends a significant portion of his time at the 2 we're in trouble.

If Kemba is brought back then Cody isn’t playing the 1. He did that at times last year when guys had injuries or covid but that all but stopped as soon as IT came in.

So you have five guys (Rozier, Martin, Hayward, Oubre, and Bouknight) for four rotational spots… the odd man out is Bouknight.

Why are we always benching our 1st round picks or trading them away. I like Cody but damn, we don't even get to see the potential of Bouk and I highly doubt we'll see much of Williams. Don't even get me started on Duren since we are without Bridges now

It’s the Hornet way. They had rather play veterans to be mediocre verses being complete trash but letting the kids develop. Lottery picks are for suckers....Hornets moto.

Trading them for second round picks and then keeping those second round players over the lottery picks that we do have seems to be the game plan.

I just don’t understand the whole Martin contract… give Bouknight a chance to develop and if he doesn’t then draft another defensive two guard next year to replace him and move him out for some sort of compensation.

The Hornets asset managing is astounding.

Cody Martin and James Bouknight are polar opposites as players. Martin doesn't have explosiveness, nor the lateral quickness and shot-creating ability Bouknight has, but Bouknight possesses 0% of Martin's defensive intensity, desire and ability to close out on wings. Having one does not preclude a team from having both.

If Bouknight will ever consider trying on defense, he'll be in a far better spot. Playing players based on draft position is not the smartest thing, unless you want to field a college team in the NBA who'll bite and foul on every pump fake, get beat backdoor like nobody's business, and take 65 stepback threes every game. You do, in fact, need people who play defense, like Martin and Mark Williams.

That’s fine but don’t waste your assets on the bench and let them walk for nothing when the time comes. Gary Payton is just as good of a player as Martin and probably the closest comparison that there is to Martin in the NBA and Golden State will be replacing him with Moody next year. Moody was selected two spots after Bouknight. Point being you eventually have to let the guys you draft try. If you don’t then it’s a revolving door of young players that you lose for nothing.

I get that, but I'm not very optimistic that Bouknight will turn out to be someone who'll make you forget Cody Martin. He's probably destined to be an eighth-man microwave to use when you're down 12 and he'll either shoot you back into it, or build the deficit to 25.

    • Won't say bust before he plays another game, but it was clear to me before the draft that wasn’t a number 1, or even close.  I guess if they can get dominant players around him and design for his deficiencies he could be serviceable. But why do you want to do all that when you can get a prototypical performance out of a guy that is whatever size and shape?  Do I cringe when I see him in the huddle? Yep, I admit it. Because I know what’s coming. But give me a real NFL arm and I’d feel a ton better about dealing with 5’10” 185. It’s always been his throwing/footwork/poor velocity for me.

    • Man, you bring up an amazing talking point. I remember thinking that though we didn't have the players we definitely had one of the best coaching staffs on paper. I figured that would translate to a great system where we could finally cycle in players year in and year out with sustained success. I was wrong after Year 1. 😂😪
