I’m looking at this while on a conference call so could be incorrectly interpreting, but seems like he is very good against tough shots (high danger) but not as great against easier shots (unblocked low and medium danger).

Also, as a stats and analyst guy, this tool is really awesome.

yeah I haven't dug in too deep but it looks that way to me too. He's not bad against the easier low and medium danger chances, but he does about what is expected. He's way better than expected against the high danger chances, in fact he's significantly better against high danger chances than any other goalie in the league and it's not even remotely close. That's why I think he will still improve a ton as he settles in and gets more comfortable playing in North America and just settling into the league -- you'll see those improvements in the low/medium danger chances save%.

Gotta agree with @t96 here...

To me, the fact that Kucci excels at the higher danger stuff, but not as much at the easier ones, tells me that he is still thinking too much. Once he settles into the NHL game and culture, we should see those numbers improve.

I would tend to agree. Generally it’s much easier for a guy to figure out how to stop the easier shots than to figure out how to stop the harder shots. Obviously he’s doing something right. In a lot of cases (not saying for Koochie) it’s a matter of staying focused all the time which is pretty normal for young guys to have to overcome early on.

Something else that can cause a goalie to struggle more with low/medium danger chances is if he doesn't see many of them and has long stretches of play where he gets cold because he's not seeing consistent action. This Canes team under Rod has been particularly susceptible to that with the way we play. Not many shots against and the ones our goalies do see tend to be more medium/high danger than low danger. Not sure if it was last game or the game before but I think we had a stretch of like 15+ minutes without allowing a single shot on Pyotr. It's tougher for a goalie to be ready for the next few shots after a stretch like that, regardless of whether they're low, med or high danger.

There are many positive about our system we run but I actually think this can be a bit of a negative. It would be fine if we were converting more of our opportunities but we have too many games with 30-40+ shots and like 2-3 goals when we should have 4-5. I think some of that recently has been many guys have just been snake bitten and we're not getting puck luck, but also we have a lot of passers/playmakers on the team and not as many guys with aggressive scorer mindsets. Svech and Aho have that as we've seen and Necas is doing better playing with confidence this year but the other guys not really.  Patches getting healthy should help that too, but I think to bring this team over the top we really do need 1 more elite goal scorer. They're hard as hell to find/acquire but we do have a ton of assets we could use. I wouldn't be in a rush to go all in on one this year but if we come up short again in the playoffs even with Patches we may need to think about it next offseason. Pastrnak if he hits free agency could be a great target.

    • Nobody is saying we don't need it, just that we have bigger needs elsewhere, and that type of WR is actually something that is often found in the mid rounds, you just have to scout and evaluate properly. Here's another way of looking at why WR in the 1st shouldn't even be considered an option. Looking only at players currently on the team, what position group would you feel strongest about 4 years from now? I'm not sure there is a better answer there than WR, as you have to think T-Mac is our best player on the team in 4 years (Brown is the only current player I think there is even an argument to be made over T-Mac there), with Coker not far behind. Our OL is too old to be considered, my opinions on Bryce is well known, Hubbard will be done by then and the rest of the RB is an unknown, Off-ball LB is maybe our biggest need, we only have 1 legit safety, it's certainly not TE, and our 2nd best CB right now will be 33 by then.   Brown should still be a beast as he'll only be 31, but nobody else on the DL projects to be that good in 4 years.  Edge rusher with Phillips, Scourton, and Princely is probably the only other possible answer than WR. So yes, that fast/shifty type of WR is 100% a need of ours, but we have so many other bigger needs both in the immediate and future, that to me, taking a WR in the 1st for the 3rd year in a row and having hit on another WR in the same time frame, just makes zero sense both currently and looking into the future.
    • Laughing at Slayton (Mooney or Calvin Austin III), but telling me that Coker is the next best thing since sliced bread...You laughing at Theo Johnson in reference to our guys too? LOL No one in their right mind thinks Nabers is anything but a stud (definitely top 10 if not 5 potential). You do realize that Thomas was in a new system with a furst-time coach last year (with a questionable QB to boot)? And yet still, it's possible that he eclipses even T-mac (not saying that he will). They didn't even mention Travis Hunter. In any event, we're not in the top half. Draft another legit receiver, and we will be.
    • Absolutely, very fair assessment of the team.
