Injury Issues

Happy as I am that Matt Moore is getting his first start this season, the real possibility exists that he may go into the game missing some of his best support staff on offense. Defense could be missing some cogs as well.

Wish it were a better scenario, but I guess it is what...aaahh crap :(

you know what, though...isn't this the best situation for an unknown commodity to come into, especially at QB.

my thoughts behind this is...if moore can make something happen with limited options around him, wouldn't there be that much more reason to give him the job? granted he had problems in preseason but how much game planning went into that?

in this situation he has the benefit of going into the game with him as the starting QB. the game plan (hopefully) will be built around his strengths. williams can play or not play with very little impact on moore one way or the other. as far as the receiving options...moose is most likely a non-factor anyway and even though jarrett looked decent last week, he's pretty much a non-factor as well. i'd love to see him work with moore but that will likely have to wait.

let's look at who moore has to work with, though. for certain we know that he will have smith. kenny moore and obviously charly martin. who on the bucs is really going to be paying attention to martin? he's a udfa that was picked up from the chargers practice squad and until very recently was on ours. if moore has any chemistry with him, that could turn out nicely. also he will have king, rosario, and barnidge as receiving options. those guys are pretty reliable options and we know what happened with him and rosario in '07. there will also be stewart and sutton out there who aren't bad targets either. if williams is in there, there is another outlet.

i can see moore throwing about 25 times and his targets looking something like this:

smith: 8

other WRs: 6

TEs: 6

RBs: 5

other than smith...i just don't see him focusing on one particular target more than others. with pass protection problems we have because of gross being out, he's going to have to get that ball out quickly anyway. thats something which is an instant upgrade over jake. that also means that he will be most likely using more targets earlier in the game than jake does.

Valid.

One thing I noticed watching Panthers.com video. In drills, they had him dropping back, moving left and moving right before throwing. Likely they've also had him do traditional drop back and setup as well, but I know Scherer values pocket mobility. On that front, he may have a more able student in Moore than Delhomme.

Of course, it could also mean they're conscious of O-Line issues :(

see there is another reason that i'm glad it's moore out there. he's mobile. he's been accused of having happy feet but when the Left side is in the shape it's in, thats not necessarily a bad thing.

one thing to consider, who was at LT when moore played before?

Either way, it's time to find out if Moore can help us so I'm glad he's getting the opportunity and I hope he plays well enough to hang onto the job for the rest of the season so we can get an extended look at him in his 3rd year. One of the things the Panthers offense has been lacking this season is the ability to stretch the field. Moore has a strong arm and good deep accuracy, if he get get it to Smitty over the top a few times things are going to get much easier for double-trouble.

I don't expect Moore to set the world on fire, he doesn't need to - we just need a guy that can take care of the ball and complete a few deep passes.

I thought Wharton was 12+ million against the cap.

12.85 million according to:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player?categoryId=200245

Gross is only 7.5 million.

wharton's contract details...

2/14/2008: Signed a six-year, $35 million contract. The deal includes $12 million guaranteed. 2009: $1.75 million, 2010: $3.9 million, 2011: $5.4 million, 2012: $5.7 million, 2013: $5.9 million, 2014: Free Agent

for the whole team...

i'm not sure where fox sports got their numbers from but they may have used his salary from last year which was $12,850,000 even though his cap hit was only $2,712,882 according to here. there was a $12mil signing bonus but that cap hit was going to be spread across the remaining years of his contract.

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
