If you watched the Staley presser today, you probably heard him talk just a bit about the Combine drill that bears his name...though he calls it the "T Drill".

Staley even challenged Sheena Quick to try running it. She says she will sometime next week...after training 😀

This tweet includes a clip of it being run...

I remember former Bengals DL coach Tim Krumrie once went over to a young prospect and engaged him in some hand fighting to test him. That drill became part of the Combine for a while too after it impressed a lot of coaches and personnel guys.

Unfortunately for us, that little event also helped convince a then Panthers executive that we should draft the player Krumrie had tested.

The player in question was Jason Peter 😖

In middle school the offensive line had a loose ball/fumble drill that we called the T-drill.

1v1, 3 point stance, Coach spikes the ball, contact then recover.

Win you get to take a knee, lose, back of the line.

Last man left had to turn his helmet backwards stand on one leg and chant “It’s me, it’s me, I’m the Big T!”

Ouch 😄

Back when I played, they were still doing things like Oklahoma drills. We also ran something called a "Swedish Trot" that I think was originally conceived as a torture method.

I remember our head coach getting hyped up about a piece of equipment he thought called "The Blaster". It blasted us all right 😆

Ah, the good old days...

Ah, the good old days...

The torture device our coaches used was “Old Smokey”.  A damn near vertical dirt embankment that went from the field back up to the school on top of the hill.  Couldn’t run it, too steep, had to use “all-4”.  Gassers til somebody puked.

That’s some deep Panther lore. I’m impressed, Sir

Read about it a little after Peter was drafted but before he was revealed to be a total bust.

Not exactly one of my favorite memories 😆

Yikes😦

Junior high Coach used to have us running sideways on a moderate incline but your story sounds much worse.

And yes, I've puked at practice 😄

Back in high school, we had to do a drill called "bull in the ring". Literally no skill to it. It was just a drill to give high school kids CTE. One person would stand in the middle while the rest of the team circles around him. Coach would call on somebody from the circle to run full speed and bang helmets with the person in the middle. Loved it when I was a kid, feeling the effects from it today lol Really dumb drill

The older I get, the more football just seems like a bad idea. It’s a great spectator sport though

We had a similar drill in high school, but involved all players.  Win or lose, though, you got back in line. I tried to be ferocious in fumble drills and usually came up with the ball.  Unfortunately, I broke a teammates arm in the 1-on-1 drill one day.

But the drill did help as I recovered several fumbles during games.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
