PFT: McKinnie's "tell" might have doomed Minnesota

On Monday, Dan Patrick (via Rick Alonzo of the St. Paul Pioneer Press) shared an interesting tidbit regarding one of the age-old techniques for securing an advantage in football.

Patrick said that former NFL tackle Tony Boselli, who was working the game for Westwood One radio as a sideline reporter, pointed out that the Cardinals knew when a pass was coming from the Vikings because of the manner in which left tackle Bryant McKinnie would line up prior to the snap.

Specifically, McKinnie puts one of his legs in a different position when preparing to pass block.

This doesn't completely account for the 30-17 loss, since McKinnie missed a portion of the game with an injury. (Also, McKinnie doesn't play defense for the Vikings.)

But if it's true that McKinnie has a "tell," the Vikings coaches need to tell him to stop doing it.

Would have been nice if this story wouldn't have come out till after we played them :(

Still, it's something to watch for.

would have been nice to keep a secret for a while longer but the Vik's only lost becuase of a late fumble vs. Pitt and last week vs Ariz. So even if he is tipping of plays, being 10-2 shows they can more then make up for it in all other areas

You think someone on this coaching staff would have spotted that and it would have helped us?

that was the good thing about Buckner back in the day....he was the less talented of the 4....but he would be the one to catch something like that.

i wonder what tells the panthers have.... probably don't really need one. just think of what the smartest play would be in this situation and expect the opposite.

When Jake's the qb a call will come down, he'll turn ghost white, sweat pouring down...boom, pass play.

Arizona also said they knew that about Matt Ryan last year in the Playoffs. Looks like they really study their game tape.

Makes sense considering the background of several coaches in that staff. We have quite a few tells, specifically involving whenever a player goes into motion.

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
