Big oof

Haynes was a dependable EDGE3 in an already thin group. DJ Johnson showed damn near nothing in preseason. That leaves YGM and Barno... the former lacking any burst while the latter flashed during preseason. We'll see who steps up I suppose.

DJ showed me that he has fantastic power to hold the edge, and solid closing speed to make backside tackles. He isn’t getting pushed around, and is build like a unit.

Holding the edge is something that isn’t flashy though and you have to specifically focus on it. Kinda like watching the details of interior linemen.

However, he is definitely and understandably full blow “thinking” out there, and he isn’t “playing“.

I could see him being more of a factor mid season or late season.

I just hope this isn’t a redshirt year because he’s already 25 or something.

Now we have TWO open outer spots? LMAO why did we cut Corral again?!? Fit doesn't even have a plan for 53 lmao I'm sorry but his GM run so far has been horrible usually we are looking for ways to keep guys we cut not looking for more guys to fill the REAL roster lmao what  disaster GM we have

This guy again? Didn't 4Yzor just ban him under one of his other 'D' screen names?

Apparently the D stands for Dumbass 🙄

He must have held the edge vs the Giants and Lions because he most definitely didn't hold the edge vs. the Jets. He was often stonewalled too on passing downs (his second snap though he showed great speed-to-power and notched a pressure). It was like seeing a faster YGM for a moment.

I did notice some things though when re-watching him vs. the Jets. He's got a great motor, always high effort (that was the part of his game that reminded me most of YGM). Run plays that go away from him? He's going to run them down on the backend. He's also a lot better against the run that expected despite not consistently setting the edge. He did display the play strength to do it though, and he very much looked like somebody that was thinking rather than playing as you mentioned.

His pass rush repertoire looked to be lacking severely. He's got a bull rush but I'd like to see him develop more violence in his hands. I'm in the same boat as you in regards to his development: hope it is quick and intended to get him going this season. He's got the physical skillset to at least rotate in on passing downs so hopefully the staff is going to come as advertised.

Fully agree. I’ll admit to not watching all his snaps so it’s likely you saw things I might have missed.

Agree on the pass rush. He is physically impressive, but doesn’t know what to do yet to keep hands off of him, even though he is strong enough to hold his ground. But naturally, you don’t want to hold your ground while rushing. You want to get by your man.

But I think Evero saw DJ holding his ground, and saw him as being useful against the run right away. Bare minimum he is hard to move, as he is already physically mature, so maybe pass rush technique can come later, while he contributes early on run downs.

He’s the anti Burns/Barno type rookie edge coming out.

DJ’s speed is special though…if he actually builds a pass rushing repertoire…watch out. That’s easier said than done though.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
