Goodell suggests extra draft picks

The only thing that needs changing in the playoffs is from 12 teams to 16. No bye weeks, and allows some hot .500 'ish teams to sneak in and screw poo up.

Punishments/rewards for resting/not resting starters is absolutely retarded. If you destroy everyone so hard that you clinch everything with a week or two to spare, it's your luxury to have that decision to make.

and if they added the draft picks incentive, I'm sure the NFL would just add an 8th round to the draft, and all teams that didn't make the playoffs automatically get the pick, the teams that rest their starters won't.

that'd be my guess.

What really needs to happen is the teams with the best records need to be in the playoffs regardless if they won the division or not.

It would make things less interesting, IMO. For one, it would make overall records much more important and inner-division and conference records of less importance (which, I'll admit, does make sense, but makes for a simpler playoff schedule and predictions, which isn't nearly as exciting IMO).

Also, if they are looking for a solution, it is going to be very hard to find one. However, if it is a solution that they want, they will find it in the way playoff teams are chosen, not in draft picks nor fines.

So say they make people play their starters. Will they then dictate what plays can be run?

Sure I'll start Peyton...so he can hand the ball off 50 times.

Then the teams would need to load up on like 2 extra HB's. Does this mean rules to enforce this too?

Well I guess when fans pay full price for a regular season game and only watch backups play then I guess it wouldnt be bad motivation. I think Goodell should fine teams that rest players it just makes the end of the season so lame for winning tea,s

That would make more sense than rewarding a team for doing what they should have done to start with.:sifone:

And I've heard some wild speculation about what this advantageous "draft choice'' compensation or manipulation will be for teams that play their starters while other teams sit theirs. - Peter King MMQB

So the way I read that, they would take away picks from teams that didn't start their regulars and give those picks to the teams that do. But what if you have 3 teams start their regulars and only one who doesn't? Where do the other 2 picks come from?

This idea clearly has not been thought through very much. Way too many questions and logistics issues. A knee-jerk reaction just to try to get the fans calmed down. It's like the TSA saying "nothing in your lap for the last hour of the flight." A dumb, nonsensical response to a real problem.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
