Josh McCown beating out Matt Moore...

We need a QB with some sort of pedigree. I know Jake was undrafted, but those are few and far between. Taking a QB in the second-third round next year at good value seems like a good idea.

Look back and tell me how many QB's with "pedigree" have won the Superbowl. I am almost willing to bet most are no name players to begin with or got draft late or not at all.

I have been repeatedly shut-down on various boards for suggesting it, but I must put my vote for Basanez in here. That way, if by some small chance he does go on to be a success in the nfl, I will have documentation of my support all along.

One thing he has going for him is that Jake and the coaching staff seem to like him a lot. And let's not forget Delhomme was cut from NO's practice squad 3 times before ever getting a shot. He also outplayed Moore in preseason (IMO).

It also doesn't mean he can't be a capable QB, or even a pretty good one. Preseason has to always be taken with a grain of salt because the plays are not called like a game.

Give him time and I think he will be a pretty good QB. If he hadn't done well in those games at the end of last year we wouldn't be being so hard on him for preseason and McCown.

Never said he couldnt become a capable QB, just that his poor preseason performance is part of the reason McCown was brought in and is ahead of him.

If you look back through NFL history though, you will find that there are quite a few non-1st round QB's that have won Super Bowls. For every Peyton Manning, there is a Ryan Leaf and a Joey Harrington just waiting to take some lucky NFL owners' money.

That's true, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't gamble on one. Where would have the Colts been all these years if they didn't pick Peyton?

You're right, I would never say never about drafting a 1st round QB. At the same time though, people need to respect and understand that Fox's philosophy is a sound one. Where would we be right now if he had picked David Carr instead of Julius Peppers?

on the topic of 1st round QBs...the only way you should draft one isn't by talent(it helps)..it should be their intelligence, work ethic, and their ability to learn and adapt through film and study..

It's easy to see why Fox said he would have taken Ryan if he dropped that far..he seems to have all that in him right now...

What's hard to see is why teams draft QBs like Ryan Leaf, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jamarcus Russel etc when it's obvious that football isn't really their highest priority in their life and just try to get by with talent and not hard work..

    • Love the Freeling pick even more after watching his pressers. Dude is sharp and definitely seems to have the right mentality. I loved hearing how personal he took having a bad game with a torn labrum and instead of seeing that as the reason for his bad game and not changing anything, it motivated him to work even harder. Such a great pick, we finally got our all pro level LT for the next decade and now we can move Ickey to RT or guard with no hurt feelings due to his injury. Second favorite pick is probably Brazzell. He said he false started on his 40 and it cost him probably 0.04 seconds, so he’s more of a 4.33 guy rather than 4.37. Really Randy Moss lite. I didn’t know anything about him prior to drafting him and first highlight reel I saw of him I immediately thought he looked like Moss. Then I saw the measurables and was like yep. Then I see that he’s drawn that comparison by many scouts and analysts. If he can add consistency and play to the level of his highlights every play then we got an incredible value.
    • During his three years at UGA he only allowed 5 sacks. He is only 21 and is on an upward trajectory. He's a great athlete that was good basketball player in high-school.  His height (76% how is this only 76%???? these guys are giants now), hands (81%), span (99%), speed (96%), quickness (10 yd. 86%), and explosiveness (vert. 96%, broad 97%) are all outstanding.  When we took Freeling, Fano, Mauioga, Proctor, and Miller were all off the board so we could have drafted Iheanachor or Lomu instead or waited to the second or third round to take Bell, Tiernan or Barber or wait even longer.  A lot of these tackles (including the first two taken) project to right tackle or guard in the NFL and that's not what we needed now.  Freeling has some sloppiness to clean up in his run blocking, but he's young and getting better.  We can let him get experience behind Walker and Moton knowing if he has to replace one of the two this year, his pass blocking won't get Bryce killed. Icky's not coming back from that injury as a nfl starting left tackle and Moton is in the twilight of his career.  If Walker has a great year, we will have to pay him a lot and if he is medicore we would want to let him walk.  Getting a LT on a rookie contract is going to help a lot with the cap.
    • It was cool but they have done this at least in recent years unless I am imagining it
