If they tag him again, Peppers would be wise to sign it as fast as he can. Without a signature, he can't talk to anyone else. I'm sure if he were to come to some agreement with a team, that team would go to Carolina to try and work a deal. I highly doubt that the Panthers would be hardassed to say you want him - 2 firsts (unless it were Atlanta calling) ... another little perk.

Without a signature, he is free to talk to anybody he wants. But any team making him an offer knows they give up 2 first round picks. Once he signs, he is locked to the Panthers for the duration of the contract (1 year for franchise tender) which means he can't talk to other teams. The Panthers could talk to other teams and trade the contract.

No sig = Peppers can talk to anybody, Panther talk to NOBODY

Sig = Panthers can talk trade to any team, Peppers talks to NOBODY

If they tag him they better trade his ass this time. I don't want a player we are paying 20 million bucks...we have too many needs to spend that much on one player.

What are the needs? WR and what? maybe some depth here or there

He said it would be fine if he had to play under the tender. Why wouldn't he? His other option is to not play at all and not make 20+ million in guaranteed money. It's like 38 Million is cash for 2 years of football. He'd certainly do it.

I'm not sure Pep would be in any hurry.

He wants to stay in Carolina.

The tag gives him 20 plus mil.

Signing the tag may end up getting him traded and if so he may have to settle for less than 20 plus mil.

He may not be the smartest character but if money is what he wants he he'll have a hard time beating this deal and he knows it.

This is correct, if the Panthers use the exclusive tag, but if they use the non-exclusive tag, Peppers can negotiate with other teams.

An "exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams.

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

This.

I believe this has been Carey's idea the whole time. 2 years and 38 million + guranteed is a good deal no matter how you slice it.

I know everyone is interested in Peppers, but the Panthers have some other really key players that need to be re-signed including Davis, Marshall, Brayton, & M. Moore. Davis and Marshall could/will demand big bucks. All of this has to be sorted out and has to impact what they do with Peppers. If they sign Peppers, who do the Panthers lose?
