"The New England Patriots remain interested in pursuing Carolina Panther star pass rusher Julius Peppers. According to NFL.com, the Panthers aren't going to use the franchise tag on Peppers. So, he'll undoubtedly hit free agency as the marquee player available on the open market. One year after the Patriots and the Panthers were the subject of trade rumors involving Peppers, the Patriots are apparently still thinking about making a run at him.

Will never happen. The Patriots are known for grabbing veteran players and getting the most out of them, but they are not known for getting veteran players and paying top dollar for them. I can really only see at team like Dallas or Washington grabbing Peppers. Could be other teams, but the Patriots and Steelers will never happen. These two teams never pay top dollar for players. The only way that Peppers will go to NE is if he decides to take a lot less $ for a chance to win a championship. I don't think he is that kind of player....

I'm sure this has been asked in the hundred or so threads on JP but, if there is no cap this year, why wouldnt we pay the incremental increase (over last year) and tag him since it wont impact our ability to sign other players?

Because it is still Richardson's $20M walking out the door.

As much as fans don't want to admit it, the NFL and owning a team is still a business.

Just because there is no cap, does not mean an owner is willing to fork out that much cash again.

They did sign Adalius Thomas to a decent contract back in 07 i think 22mil over the first 2 yrs. I wouldn't be suprised if they spent a good chunk on Peppers and I also wouldn't be that suprised if he took a little below market value to sign with them.

I love Pep and want him back but if he goes to the patriots he is dead to me.

^^ uhhhh, that article writer is blatantly lying, nowhere has ANYONE said we officially weren't going to use a tag on Peppers.

I can't wait till we tag them and make this A$$hole eat his words.

I hope they are doing some dealing now. Trying to keep it under wraps.

Last week someone posted a link about how many DE have flourished after the age of 30. Only one or two had great seasons after the age of 30. Peppers is a physical freak so I think he has 3 or 4 good seasons remaining.

Either way I don't see us letting him walk without compensation.

Not debating you but that contract was $7 million a year but was front-end loaded. i don't think anyone will argue against me that the Patriots have a history of paying top dollar for players. Maybe he will go there, but I don't see them paying him anywhere close to what he wants.

I personally don't believe that you should manage a team with an open check book, even in an uncapped year. If would be different if this was baseball, but this uncapped year will only last a year then look at what you have to deal with. Once you over pay one guy then the whole rest of the the team starts feeling like they are entitled to more $. Look at the success of teams that role out the big contracts. Simply, it normally doesn't work. You need players that want to be here that are grounded(relatively speaking) as a baseline. Pep wants to go and we have done everything to keep him here....LET HIM GO.

Yeah, after wasting 24mill on Jake, which was REALLY smart. I can't believe Hurney still has a job. Pay Jake 20mill and let Peppers walk, genius!

I really don't think you can blame this one on Hurney or at least not directly. I believe it was Fox's decision to extend him. Look how long he stuck with him when Moore was clearly the better option. While I do think the Guaranteed money was way to much but Hurney signed that deal to save cap. No I do blame this entire FO for not just letting pep walk last year. That put us in the position were we had to extend a guy who was coming off his worst game ever when he was in the last year of his deal to save cap room.

      Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.

      Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.

      I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
