No one with other potential NFL HC options was taking this job. That's the sad reality. Our candidate pool started with the options no one else was interested in.

maybe.  Could explain Morgan too.  Maybe the search firm recommended a lot of options that just weren't actually going to happen.

It stems from Rhule.  That it is the birth of this nightmare.  It's the Ben McAdooing of the Panthers.  That was the start of us having to settle for the bare bottom.

I don't buy that.  I mean, Tepper hired them to have their own input....but Tepper also had a team working on the hires.  They were just a voice.  So was Dave, Nicole, Jim FREAKING Caldwell which I still can't get over....

But there is no way I believe an outside firm searched the world over and said we found the guy Mr. Tepper you need to hire.  He was right here in house and part of your team that was making all these bad moves that lead to you being he worst professional team in all of sports....and they went with that and that alone.  That was Dave, Nicole and Jim Caldwell hiring the GM.

Dave Canales especially fits the mold of coaches they have recommended before. Young offensive minded coach that just has a solid performance as an OC. Canales was less experienced as a play caller but it was a tough job to sell as well.

I mean Dave and Nicole being in the mix makes sense. They are paying the firm after all. I’m with you on the Caldwell thing though. I’m not sure why he is still here….

the sports firm got paid to recommend a dude that only called plays for one year, got bypassed by his old employer, had the worst run game in the nfl and we were his only interview.   poo I am in the wrong business

So which NFL potential HC candidate outright refused our job that you wanted us to get?  The Ben Johnson thing happened last year but apparently that is a Ben issue more than it is a Carolina issue.  Jim Harbaugh reached out to us before to which we ignored, Vrabel interviewed for the job.

This year we had Harbaugh, Macdonald, Canales, Morris, Pierce, Callahan (interviewed), Mayo, and Quinn take on new HC jobs.  Which one of these guys is the mysterious high potential HC that refused to work here??

"There were a plethora of coaches and players recently saying how positive and fun it was working for/with Canales.  I dont recall one saying how he out schemed or put together a lights out game plan to beat some team.  His offense last year was kindof "meh" and there are a few other red flags so I guess we will just have to wait and see and be patient.   Like I said, this was probably the best Tepper could have done at the time."

You seem to think he was the best hire we could have made?  Sounds like they did their job.

sure, but i think it was more who morgan wanted after the first round of interviews.  We will never know but would it really surprise you if some from the first round were like "nah, I aint hitching my wagon and career to bryce"?

we hired a guy who has a jumbled background, who didnt interview anywhere else including his long time team, one year player caller on an average at best offense.  You really think tepper and morgan simply outsmarted the rest of the league?

I think he was as good of a candidate as any of those other ones.  Gambling on one a year before he is ready isn't the worst strategy.  It's always a gamble.

Seriously why are you just avoiding the question?  Which one of those newly hired coaches turned us down?  Which one would you rather us have hired??  Let's hear it.  You literally said Canales was the best we could do.

how am I supposed to know that?  If I had my choice I would have gone macdonald or harbaugh but again based on general principle DC is a fine hire.  Best this cycle, no, blows the doors off with his career arc, no.  But based on tepper and this franchise he was probably the best we could do without tepper pulling a rhule contract.

I mean, there was legit reporting the Panthers were doing a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure they weren't even rejected for interview requests.  Carolina seems in total damage control.  Interviews often serve tons of purposes.  You could probably reasonably argue some rolled in here with no real intent on taking it.  It's interview practice for some.  League folks have talked about that for awhile.  It's some simply not wanting to turn down an offer.  For some it may be trying to leverage other jobs and get them to make a move.  I mean, we know that type bologna all happens.  Did it happen here? who knows.  This is offseason imagination time.  You can think up all sorts of stuff that could be plausible.

I mean, maybe they didn't offer jobs to certain people because they knew the answer.  Maybe they found out the real answer before an offer.

I think Dan Morgan job is the best indicator that Carolina didn't have TONS of options in reality.  Given the search firm talk and ending up doing that in the end.

It's stems from Tepper's incompetence and perceived heavy meddling. Rhule is a symptom not the disease.

MacDonald interviewed with us.  Harbaugh's camp reach out to us.  You could probably argue Harbaugh wouldn't have taken the job he was just trying to increase his demand, but MacDonald is super green and not really turning down anyone.  He was one of the last ones hired if I remember correctly.

So there wasn't some line of potential head coaches that refused to coach here because of one player or the owner.  That's all I am saying.  MacDonald is as much of a gamble and Canales.  Who know who will work out?

oh no doubt.  Tepper is it.  The McAdoo hire imo was the first real sign of what we had become....was seen by the rest of the NFL world.

    • I have different  opinion on what is a big time throw. Some of those CJ throws the receiver is running wide open, one of them he completely under throws.
    • agreed, which is why if Bryce gets his poo together the division is for the taking. Even with Bryce sucking we were in every NFC South game last year   yep, a tortured longtime Hornets and Panthers fan
