Fox: Cutting Jake was best for the team

Mark your calendars Huddlers, this is the one time a decade that John Fox opens up and says some newsmaking things in an interview:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/03/26/1339200/fox-delhommes-exit-best-for-team.html

He basically says that it's unprecedented for a long-term starter to stay around another year on the bench because it divides loyalties in the locker room (which is exactly what I had been saying since the season ended).

Also, he talks a little about fans booing near the end.

I recommend reading it if only because there are some new things in there.

I'm not sure that jake would've been a problem on the team. I think that he would've been a good teacher and a quality backup. I also think that his love for the Panthers is more than his love/desire to start.

Demoted players hanging around is never good for a team. No matter how much of a stand up good guy Jake is...it would have not been good for the team.

Even if Jake was ok with it. Some of the players are going to be loyal to Jake and some to Moore. This divides the team and this is why we let him go.

That sums it up nicely...Letting Jake go was a wise decision on the Panthers part.I don't believe Matt Moore would have reached his full potential with Jake lurking in the background...Also the Panthers would be facing the possibility of a divided lockerroom when Matt had a bad game,as all QB's do, sooner or later.

"[Moore] is young. He’s got a lot of physical tools. I like his mindset. I saw him improve. … He had about a 93 quarterback rating. We had hovered around 59 most of the season. That gave us a chance to win games and hopefully he can do that moving forward.”

Fox gave away what we pretty much already knew about him. He stuck with the guy giving with a rating of 59 until he had to bench him because of the finger injury. Call it loyality, fear of the unknown, Moore not acting like a Fox type football player on the practice field, or whatever...that was still dumb dumb dumb.

I'm so glad JR is calling the shots now. Fox's stranglehold on the FO is loosened and he cant be ultra conservative/safe anymore.

    • I would say that seems like an odd comment from Morgan, but at the same time it's almost impossible to find a college QB declaring for the draft to have less physical ability than BY so you can assume almost anyone you bring in would be your go to QB sneak/designed run guy.
    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
