Why do so many Mock's got us drafting a DT?

Don't we have like 5 or 6 on the roster all of them young one we drafted last year. I can see DE we need a vet in my opinon but a rookie would help too at that position. If we get a DT it should a vet. I hope we sign Hollis back instead of drafting 1.

last time I checked we didn't have single DT that was proven to be good enough to even be an average starting DT for Carolina.

Hollis is too old. They want to give reps to young guys in 2010 to see what they got and to let them get better.

Because we need a GOOD DT.

just because we have a lot of bodies to throw in there doesn't mean that we have anyone reliable.

that said....we did a pretty good job eventually of filling in there. we should be able to do that again via FA and the draft. it's not an area i am incredibly worried about. it may take a few games to figure out who should be getting the most PT but it should work out. i feel that with leonard, johnson, tank, and irvin we have a good start but i am far from being confident in that corps. i won't put hayden in there because i have no interest in keeping him beyond TC.

we should only take a DT with the first pick if someone solid falls to us like brian price. there are a couple others i wouldn't mind taking with the first or second pick but i think that WR is the biggest need.

we'll probably go BPA among WR, DE, DT, SLB, SS, QB with the first couple picks.

How many times is this question going to be asked? Its because we just cut 2 veteran starters and to the outside world it appears we have nothing behind (our projected starters both played little last year and finished the season or IR).

Why is this so shocking?

Because as I said in another thread, a Tampa 2 requires a great DT and good DEs. Right now we have 2 DTs Irvin and Louis coming off IR and nobody proven behind them. I would love a veteran also except I am wanting Haynesworth not some castaway from another team's reject pile. Otherwise we need someone in the draft.

As I said before why would you draft 1 then. Your just adding another player who doesn't have NFL exp. and you don't really know can do the JOB. Honestly DT position really needs a vet not another young player you have too train to play the Big league way. Not too mention we don't have a 1st round pick. Wr is a bigger need and DE I think is more of a need too. Even if you draft a DT in the 3rd will he really be a impact player this year or are we just hoping and praying again?

How many Nfl starts will a 2nd or 3rd round rookie have?

I think we're just fine at DT and I don't expect us to draft one at all. Fox's and Hurney's comments seem like they are content with what they have.

I see us making some trades to get an impact DE & WR, then using the remaining picks for depth.

If we don't pick up an impact DT it will just be another mistake we will have made this year. But it won't be the only one so its all good.

I don't think you can get a 1st year impact DT in the 2nd or 3rd round unless alot of Nfl people get dumb. We got to get a vet some how after june 1st cuts.

Eh, you can reverse that as well as we saw last year. If you get good pressure from the outside, and the DE's are still quick enough to at least funnel the run inside, the only thing required is DT's that can tackle well and/or occupy space to prevent gashing up the middle (like Hollis Thomas, for example).

Deficiencies at one position can hide flaws in others. In Tampa's 2002 team, Simeon Rice couldn't play the run for poo, but he had Mr Brooks behind him to clean up his mistakes. The only area you can't slack on is having one or hopefully two athletic, fast, top notch LB's with the MLB being the key.

That being said, we need to upgrade the line in at least one of the positions. I think in this draft, DE would be the easier call, but we'll see what's out there.

    • Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
    • Crosby will garner a haul in a trade. I would be reluctant to make that trade because of the following: 1. Our overall roster is awful. We cannot afford to be trading away valuable draft capital. 2. He isn't the best fit(IMO) for the scheme that Evero runs.  I love the player but it would really need to be at a reasonable deal and I think he is likely to garner an unreasonable price if he gets traded.
    • In terms of need, EDGE is currently #1. Our pass rush is near league worst levels. However, I don't subscribe to "need" based drafting. BPA all day.  We do need to dramatically upgrade over Scourton, Jones, Wonnum and Umanmielen. That is likely in the running for the NFL's worst two deep. Not saying all those players are bad, but I am saying 100% of those players are 2nd or 3rd stringers.
