Bands you thought would become bigger than they did?

2 Skinnee J's

Phunk Junkeez

2 Skinnee J's just got too caught up in a small East Coast touring/party scene. Their concerts were fun as hell back in the dizzle. Phunk Junkeez were just a little too limited.

I thought Liz Phair would be a massive indie success, but alas her first album was all she had in her. Same thing with Jill Scott.

Felix Da Housecat almost single handedly brought the electro scene back (never thought it'd still be around at the end of the decade), yet never saw too much from it himself.

On the flip side, when Radiohead first came out, there wasn't even the slightest hint they'd be making an album as huge as OK Computer only a few years later. I had them pegged as a one hit wonder. Also Daft Punk's Godlike status amongst the indie kids never ceases to amuse me.

True.

My friends just went to their Raleigh acoustic show and they were saying how Virginia Beach and the Triangle had their biggest following

There really isn't much of a "big" anymore for real bands. Too many avenues for exposure in today's world for anything other than a pure pop act to become huge.

It's not a bad thing, as there is more music that's accessible than ever before. For example, you don't have to live in California to hear the local talent.

I don't know. There is a shitload of music out there. Most people don't realize it. Just because a band isn't the next Led Zeppelin doesn't mean they failed. Because there will never be another Led Zeppelin.

Because we have more than just one measly radio station for bands to try to get on.

Also I think it's funny ETID was mentioned, as I used to go see them years ago when they were nowhere near what they are today. Relatively speaking, they are huge now. :)

Just listen to the rythm of my heart....

What happened to Wolfmother? Kinda sounded like Led Zeppelin, they had one song "Woman" and I never heard from them again.

I went to a concert last summer (the killers in toronto labor day weekend) and the opening band was awesome. i remember saying to my gf i wonder who this is because they are really good and they almost sound like another led zeppelin.

turned out it was wolfmother and they were promoting their new cd which was about to get released called cosmic egg.

The Darkness was one of those bands for me. I guess the kids just didn't appreciate the early 80's sound...

Lol, the first time I saw The Darkness, they were so campy I thought they were a SNL skit or something.

Truth be told, I am actually more surprised they got as big as they did.

This. Other bands in genre that is the meal-ticket at the moment (currently R&B/Hip-hop/Pop hybrids), a band can really only become "big" within it's own niche anymore.

Back in the Hot Damn! days. They are definitely bigger than they were, but they still hardly headline their own tours. And they definitely don't headline anything more than bars. They are a tremendous live act though. Keith Buckley is a great vocalist.
