Panthers depth chart

There's a little part of my brain that wonders if the Norwood pick might have come in part because the Panthers are having trouble working out a long term deal with Thomas Davis.

Mind you, that's pure speculation. I've seen nothing to indicate this is so, but it would make some sense.

That would make sense, considering he's going to command top dollar for a 4-3 OLB. 40 million over 6 years type money even with the Injury.

I see Norwood as a Meeks DE

That could depend on what happens with Davis.

Sign him long term, and Norwood becomes a backup LB or pass rushing DE.

Fail to do so, and you go with Plan B.

Right now, he's slated for linebacker, but there's flexibility.

shouldn't be any surprise that connor has the starting gig at Sam locked up for now. all signs were pointing to it and it's probably the best thing. doesn't matter much, though...SLB doesn't see a whole lot of time on the field anyway compared to the other two LBs...at least not on this defense.

i think norwood was brought in mainly for his pass rushing ability but to have it on the opposite side of davis. if they are serious about increasing the pressure on the QB then this would be a great way to do it. i'm thinking we'll be seeing a lot more blitzing from the back 7 this year....esp. with davis and norwood.

and i love it. all this talk about Clausen, we have a solid D. and we will keep that going. our Coaches must really have confidence in who they have, or else it would have been a bigger pressing issue. they are probably banking on some training camp releases and/or late round trade value again.

Robert Mathis 6-2 245

Dwight Freeney 6-1 268

Everette Brown 6-2 256

Eric Norwood 6-1 245

No argument that he fits the mold.

Fox said at his presser that he'll be playing strong side linebacker...for now, at least. If they can't extend Davis, then the logical move could be to start him there and move Conner or Anderson to the weak side.

You have to remember they also drafted Greg Hardy to play DE. At least three spots in the DE rotation are set. If Hardy pans out, he'd be the fourth (there's been no indication they've considered moving him inside).

If Hardy doesn't pan out, then maybe Norwood gets a crack, assuming someone like Hilee Taylor or Eric Moore hasn't earned the spot. So in a way, Norwood could be insurance for two scenarios at once.

Of course, the most ideal outcome would still be to sign Davis to a long term deal. Then you have good depth and can use Norwood however you want.

Essentially what Mark Fields used to do so well. We've missed that.

(Fields was pre-Meeks, but obviously not pre-Fox)

I believe Norwood was mentioned as DE... our problem with this guy will be he is too slow to be a sideline to sideline LB, but somewhat small to be a DE...

a friend told me about this pick while we were at a music festival.. something about him being a very good football player and extremely glad we picked him up..

god forbid we can't sign TD.. he's a playmaker.. you have to keep him included in the core.. I hope he's working with us (and we with him) on this contract...

I'd hate to lose Davis. Seriously hate it.

But in the end, it's still a business, and you have to plan for all kinds of unpleasant contingencies.
