There's no way they drafted him to be a sideline to sideline FS. We just tried to make him that because we didn't have any other option.

Go look back at the draft articles. Our coaching staff was on record believing he was going to be that guy. Which, don't forget he was a FS in college.

And there is absolutely no way you dont pick up ickys 5th just on general principle

It's not principle, it's just smart business. The alternative is back to the drawing board or spending insanely in free agency.

Now the contract extension could be dicey. Let's hope he gives the hometown discount as a CLT native and lifelong Panthers fan.

Honestly, the only actual position I recall them naming specifically with him was nickel. Most of the talk was about him just being a versatile position less chess pieces. Which honestly was how he played best when he should've won DROY basically playing the same "joker" hybrid LB/S role that TD did as a rookie.

There is no free agent that is going to be as good as icky even with his faults.  The 5th year option is a relative "cheaper" way to buy you time and evaluate him more.  Having to spend a high pick again for an unproven LT is just not the noise this franchise needs anytime soon.   Having said that in complete transparency, if that LSU kid is there at 8 and if he is the highest on their board I would take him and not look back.   Let motons deal run its course, move icky to the right and let this pass blocking phenom take over in 26.

I think the truth is, as hard as it is for Panthers fans to accept, he is a very scheme specific guy with a limited ceiling.

With our current DC, he doesn't fit at all. Take that as you will, as I think everyone should have ample questions about how Evero utilizes talent.

I just think he's a LB in today's NFL. Kam Chancellor would've been too.

The bad part is that you see how good Becton has been with the switch to OG. Had we been a little more forward thinking, perhaps you don't spend mega bucks on the OG's and move Ikey inside once you get a good LT replacement.

Ikey has the capability to be a solid LT but possibly All Pro OG.

Maybe but the pendulum is starting to swing a little towards more rushing based attacks(typical cyclical NFL). In that world he doesn't fit at LB unless he bulks up quite a bit.

He isn't that different than someone like Isaiah Simmons in terms of being a guy that is hard to find a spot to be successful in.

In that world he's a traditional strong safety which over the past decade or so has kinda gone the way of the FB on offense. Not many teams really have one anymore.

True. The infuriating thing is he is such a talented player that you want to find a way to use him effectively.

Evero is a Vic Fangio disciple but he just doesn’t have the players to run it effectively. This defense is the worst possible defense you can run with limited talent. Small and slow everywhere but play zone and “attack” the football and get steamrolled by the run. This guy is a bum and if there are no all pro LB’s its a trash scheme

Sometimes a team has a special season (Super Bowl 50 Panthers) where everything just comes together. Washington had an agreement with Ben Johnson at this point last offseason before he changed his mind. They had to scramble last minute and hired Quinn, Commanders got their revenge on Ben Saturday night.

    • Kon is a damn stud but it’s not any individual player’s team. All of the “big 3” are incredibly and equally important IMO. And LaMelo makes Kon way better (look at his shooting splits with LaMelo on the floor vs without. Also Moose and even Miles are important cogs. Honestly think we’re 1 piece away from being legit top contenders if the young guys continue to develop the next year or two. I trust this FO to be patient to find that piece within the next 2-3 years and not force anything. Plenty of time and even without adding anyone we have the pieces in place overall already to compete with any team.
    • We lost 2 very close and winnable games against top teams in the league while missing 3 critical players despite 2 of our top 3 players shooting unusually terribly. Still split the 4 games that Moose and Miles were suspended, winning the most important one vs the Hawks. This ain’t yo mama’s Hornets man. Hopefully Coby can go soon but even if not Moose and Miles are huge additions for our starting lineup and bench rotations. Schedule is pretty tough after these next 4 but I think we’ll take care of business the next 4 to get to .500 then finish slightly above .500 after that to get a 7 or 8 seed. Keep it rolling boys. Also Kon is having an insanely historic rookie season as a shooter. Like truly can’t believe my eyes watching this kid level of historic. Man what a fuging home run of a draft pick and exactly what this team needed to take that next step forward. He’s gonna shatter the rookie 3 point and franchise 3 point records. Has a real chance to be the 2nd best 3 point shooter ever or dare I say even get to Curry’s level (as a pure shooter, Curry obviously has way more to his game that has made him a GOAT).
    • I hear you but yeah like you say, above average. His numbers were good. You’d think it would be a no brainer. Anyhow… I guess the new staff is also fine with him walking?    I hope if we sign him there isn’t some secret issue of his that led to him not being valued.
