Unrestricted free agent Raymond Felton has been contacted by seven teams as all signs point to him leaving Charlotte. The next step may be if the Bobcats can get compensation for their starting point guard through a sign-and-trade deal.

"We would consider a sign-and-trade with the Bobcats if it would help them and Raymond as well," agent Tony Dutt said Thursday. "I was excited by the high level of teams that contacted us."

Dutt wouldn't name the seven teams, but the Bobcats weren't among them as they appear ready to make a change in the backcourt.

The Bobcats have made no push to re-sign Felton in part because of salary-cap issues. The team's payroll is close to the luxury tax, a figure owner Michael Jordan has said the team won't exceed.

When the Bobcats gave Tyrus Thomas a one-year, $6.2 million qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent and Tyson Chandler didn't opt out of the final year of his deal, it left Charlotte only about $2 million shy of the projected luxury tax figure and may have marked the end of Felton's time in Charlotte.

He's been very solid with us, but its time to move on. A sign-and-trade would be great, since it ensures that we'd be compensated. I think this also signals that we're on the verge of trading either Chandler or Mohammad for a PG.

if Miami get Lebron, Wade, Bosh and Felton- you can basically gift-wrap the title next year..

for the longest time, Felton had been the 2nd option on our team until Jax came here- but he was still taking the final shots.. if he were to go to Miami- he would be 4th on the list and be able to just focus on distribution and knocking down the occasional 3- which he stepped up in that area last year..

They simply can not do that. They can add a max free agent to go with Wade, or they can add two if they get someone in a sign-and-trade and they send Beasley away. If they do that though, they'd have to fill the rest of the roster with veteran minimum guys, meaning they won't have a bench. Wade, one other top free agent, and Felton is what they can do.

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
