Gazette think's Jarrett may be released

Recommended Posts

In my opinion, Jarrett has only one upside over Lafell and Edwards… and that’s experience. His route running has probably improved, along with his physical skills. But he’s the worst wide receiver on our roster when it comes to getting off the line. He showed some improvement near the end of the season, but only really showed it against the Saints’ backups.

I’ve heard some rumblings about Charly Martin and his relationship and timing with Matt Moore has been sky rocketing. So I wouldn’t completely count this guy out.

If Jarrett stays on the team, I’ll go with: Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Brandon Lafell, Armantti Edwards, David Gettis and Wallace Wright. If Jarrett goes: Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell, Armantti Edwards, David Gettis, Charly Martin and Wallace Wright. I still think Charly Martin might get David Gettis’ spot though, splitting time in the slot with Edwards.. while bumping David Gettis down to Special Teams work. We’re gonna carry 6 receivers this season though because we’ve lacked good depth like this for quite some time now.

I agree that Martin is the sleeper out of the group. I have heard nothing but good things about him. He may be more of a threat to Moore's chances than many want to believe.

Here's my take on the whole situation and you can take it or leave it but anybody remember Sidney rice before last season? No. Well he was selected about the same time as jarrett and has a very similar skill set. I wanted rice in that draft but we grabbed jarrett instead. Rice was also seen as a bust until last season when farve came in and spread the ball around and made rice into a superstar.

Now I'm not saying that DJ is as good as rice but what I will say is that a new WR coach and a new QB throwing him the ball and getting him involved could e just what the doctor ordered. Nobody on this forum can argue that he doesn't have hands and I think everyone can even say that him and matt have actually had some chemistry in preseason and during the season.

Let's wait and see if some new coaching and a new QB boost jarrett to a whole new level. This will be his best shot by far and I'm betting that he makes the most of it and becomes a solid number two.

If not then you can all say "I told you so" but until that day comes I am still holding out hope that he lives up to his potential.

Right now, my gut is telling me to go with this line-up

1. Steve Smith

2. Dwayne Jarrett

3. Brandon LaFell

4. Armanti Edwards

5. David Gettis

6. Wallace Wright

Now I know 6 wide outs is a little much, but probably receives this spot based on his ability to play special teams unlike or better than other players on the bubble such as cornerback; C.J. Wilson, CB; Brian Witherspoon, DE; Hilee Taylor, DT; Nick Hayden, DT; Ed Johnson, DE; Corvey Irvin; DT; Derek Landri, RB; Mike Goodson, S; Aaron Francisco; and S; Marcus Hudson.

Now, I know most of these guys can play special teams, but in my opinion Wallace Wright is one of the better special team's players in the league. If I had to guess I would say Wright makes the team and Hayden gets cut.

I think that's exactly what our WR corp will look like. I might swap Gettis' and Wright's spots since Wright is going to be active on gamedays, while Gettis probably won't. I believe that while Gettis is raw, he has a lot of upside, so I think the team will try to keep him around to develop (and with his upside, he probably wouldn't make it onto the PS).

The only question mark is Jarrett's spot. I believe that if he does anything at all in TC, he will be given another chance because the team does think he has talent, if only he will ever realize that talent. However, if he does little in TC, then I don't think he will get any free passes, and the team will cut ties. If that does happen, then I think his spot will be up for grabs between Moore and Martin (not as #2, though, but as the 5th or 6th WR).

This is definitely a make or break year for Jarrett, he's had 3 years to figure it out - if he hasn't gotten it figured out by now, there's no hope.

And his built-in excuse that he wasn't targeted very often is gone. If he doesn't show much with a new QB and a reportedly more aggressive passing game, then it's time for him to move on.

Every year in camp there are guys that shine bright, and then just dissappear. I'm hoping this year that our WR's 3-6 can actually maintain some level of sustained production, and they don't turn into a bunch of Jason Carter 2.0's

If anyone watched Jarrett in college he didn't always look open. But when thrown to he made sure he was the guy that came down the ball. He often made defenders who appeared to be "in position" look pretty foolish. The difference is his QB had confidence in him and got the ball to him and allowed him to make the play. Kinda like Jake and Smitty. Whenever thrown to Jarrett has made plays. Period. He just wasn't thrown to often. If he gets his head on straight (and I think he will with all the competition) he could be pretty damn good with a new QB under center. IMHO

Wow, if IF LaFell becomes the other starting receiver if Jarrett is released, he's going to have a tough time early on. Even if he gets a lot of single coverage (and he will, nobody will respect him and will focus on 89 as usual), a 2nd round pick having to start right away? Recipe for disaster.

He just doesn't have the drive to be an NFL receiver. Nobody gets on the field on talent alone. At this level, every guy is insanely talented.

I love how you can make claims like this when he plays under a coach who rarely uses young players at skill positions, plays in a run heavy offense that hardly uses 3 wide sets and most importantly had one of the three worst QB's in the league at the helm (completely forgot the fact that Jake only threw the ball to two receivers it's really so obvious it needs not to be mentioned).....I have a feeling Jarrett will silence his critics this year, if he doesn't so be it he's a bust and cut him....
