Per Yasinskas: Quarterback Competition?

Im just saying The Golden Calf of Bristol had 1 good throw and then he looked like he was about to get raped every play. At least Clausen threw some good balls and looked poised. I just don't agree that The Golden Calf of Bristol looked better than Clausen.

Like we both said, they each threw one good pass. Clausen got sacked 2 times as well and ran for his life others. Neither was all that great, Clausen just got a better game plan since he had a running game and was brought along slowly in the second quarter. He looked good as much because the coaches didn't try and make him do too much as much as it was his skill level.

P55 I believe it but I just want to check to make sure we're not still just choosing because we have done that for the last few years

Since this is the first year that Jake has gone in as the starter since 2004, I would say it was more wide open than it has been in years.

I watched both. The Golden Calf of Bristol had issues and so did Clausen. Truth is Clausen threw 3 balls that should have been picked. The one that was, the Moore pass, and the one to the back in traffic.

He really threw 1 good ball to Rosario and that is it. He is a project like The Golden Calf of Bristol.

I don't agree with you on this AT ALL!

The pass to Moore should not have been an interception, that was a great pass and catch! The interception was not his fault and take a look at the pass back into "traffic" all you see are panthers standing around absolutely NO threat of being picked off...that is what you call a heads up play and you see wily old vets like Brett throw those all the time! Why do you have so much hate for Clausen?

The pass to Moore was horrible judgment and that was a good play by Moore not by Clausen. It should have been a pick or at the least an incomplete but Moore made a great catch on a badly thrown ball.

The interception was his fault even though the receiver slipped. He threw it into tight double coverage on the sideline.

The pass back across his body is a technical no-no but he threw it to the right place and it worked. I won't dock him for that.

WAY too much is being put into the 1st preseason where Clausen played against scrubs.

There is a reason why all reports have said Moore is lightyears ahead of Clausen prior to that game....

Those reports of him being light years better than Clausen stopped after the Panthers had their first scrimmage. People stopped saying there was a true QB competition around that time as well and everyone just assumed Moore was a lock to start all of this season. After that game, and now after the first preseason game, people are starting to say there is a QB competition.

Factor in how the front office feels about him and you know he will play sooner or later. Hurney almost cried on tv after drafting Clausen. They have been nothing but ecstatic when talking about him.

I don't see how anyone can honestly think the Panthers will keep Clausen on the bench for 2-3 years of his 4 year contract. Matt Moore is gone after this year in all likelihood. He plays well, we can't afford to keep him. He plays bad, nobody will start him.

And for everyone who keeps talking about Clausen with the two's and Moore with the ones... Moore would have looked bad on the twos as well with that offensive line. They block nobody. I see no reason why Clausen wouldn't have done just as well as Moore with the ones that game with a better offensive line. Clausen likely wouldn't have been blasted and fumbled like Moore did either since Clausen was reading the defense very well.

Maybe the speed of the game doesn't affect Moore anymore since he has been here a while and he is ahead of Clausen on that, but Clausen definitely reads a defense and makes pre-snap reads better than Moore does and he is only a rookie.

Wrong, look at the replay, ball was out of the reach of the receivers hands, it was tiped by Moore and caught by Moore...the ball was thrown only where the receiver could catch it...at least thats the way it looks in every replay I have seen...Also, seems like analyst would be talking about how terrible that play was instead of showing it as highlights and saying how great it was! Am I wrong here? Was it not tiped by Moore and caught by Moore?

The interception was his fault even though the receiver slipped. He threw it into tight double coverage on the sideline.

Double coverage? I can't find anything on youtube, didn't look that hard either, but I only remember one guy covering that play...the guy that intercepted it when he fell down?!

So when vets do it and its a great heads up play there is nothing wrong with it but since it was a rookie he gets docked? Lets see if they hold that play against sir Brett when the HoF comes knocking

    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
