What will it take to lay off the Clausen bashing?

So if for example, deangelo runs in the Middle of the field rather than taking a few yard loss which leads to a game winning kasay FG, then people who are whining that

Clausen should be benched would shut up? Somehow I doubt it.

Other than P55 who said Clausen should be benched?

Even if DeAngelo had run around Usama Young and scored the game winning touchdown on his final cutback run attempt I would still criticize Clausen for throwing the ball at Gettis's feet.

Clausen definitely threw some bad passes yesterday.

But he played well enough as a rookie that the Panthers could have won the game.

It's really that simple.

He has to play better and I'll stop bashing him. I'm not his mommy and I'm not going to make excuses for him.

11-21 146 yards 1TD is not that impressive. "Oh but he's a rookie QB" take that garbage somewhere else to someone who wants to hear it. Jimmy Clausen isn't posting on twitter "Well I'm a rookie". He knows nobody cares. The other defense doesn't care, Steve Smith doesn't care, I don't care.

What makes it even worse for Clausen is that Moore was tearing it up last season with a very similar offense (Moose, Hoover, Otah missing, and that 97% supporting Clausen is likely the same 97% saying Moose and Hoover were too old and not contributing).

Until Clausen starts hitting #89 and others down field for big gains and wins some games, I'm gonna be skeptical and keep thinking they quit on Moore too early.

You may not like those stats but they are better stats than the QB that started agains Jimmy. Some people would claim said QB is an "elite" QB and happens to have a SB ring and was playing at home.

Just sayin.........

Edit: Oh, and there was no "trash" time in this game for Jimmy to pad his stats

He didn't have better stats than Drew Brees....

Drew Brees 33/48 68.8% 275 yards 1TD

Jimmy Clausen 11/21 52.4% 146 yards 1TD

33 completions, 275 yards, 70%. It's not even comparable.

How big a gain do you need? 55 yards and a TD is not a big gain? 40 yards is not a big gain? Hell, I'm comfortable with him throwing 15 yard completions, personally. If he can do that regularly, the longer stuff will open up.

How big is big, exactly? At what point do you accept that he is not only capable of big plays but has made them, just not to Smith? For years, our only big plays in the passing game were to Smith. the last two weeks, he managed to make two to other players (and some other nice throws, too). Clausen is likely using Smith more as a decoy because the one time he forces it to him, it's picked off. Clausen will come around and get Smith the ball. By no means is Clausen playing perfect, but he had an average game for a quarterback, which is pretty good for a rookie, imo.

He had a better QB rating I do believe. Am I wrong on that? Meaning his overall play was better?

He did have a slightly higher rating - which I think is because the math favors someone who throws 1 TD In 11 passes more than 1 TD in 33. QB rating does not tell the whole story, the same way that Moore's game against NE didn't mean he outplayed Tom Brady as some people claimed.

But, he did well for: 1) being a rookie, 2) making his first road start, and 3) playing against a very aggressive, ball-hawking Saints defense.

    • The OL has certainly been better than the trainwreck it was three or four years ago. As far as competitiveness let's apply some realism and clarity here. Quite a bit of the competitiveness in 2025 came from the defensive side of the ball which gave up the most points in league history the year before and was one of the bottom 5 units in terms of salary cap allocation for 2025 while the OL was top 3. We had the 26th passing offense last year. And if not for a herculean couple of games from Rico Dowdle we don't back our way into the division title or make the playoffs because we went 4-6 in our final ten games including being swept by the Saints who were starting a rookie 2nd round pick most of us mercilessly mocked when they selected him. In conclusion yes we've seen a difference. The question now is will the investment pay off the way we want. But the only way that happens is if we field a top 15 offense. If we can't even crack the top 20 then there need to be some very warm seats across the board. And I would hope just about anyone here should agree with that.
    • These Spurs are lowkey loaded.  If healthy, they could win it all this year (#2 in the West right now). I still think we’ve gotta keep Kalk on Wemby; he’s not getting completely dominated like every other NBA center.
    • Am I the only one who doesn't understand this fan bases infatuation with adding a high end TE? Especially when we have some bigger bodies in T-Mac and Coker who can slide into the slot at times and provide the big dependable target over the middle that most teams use their TE for. I mean, sure, it would be nice to have one of those elite TE's, but I feel like that's a position your better off going cheap with a committee who each bring something different to the table while spending our cap room on the more important positions. I like the potential we saw from Evans this year, Sanders could be a best if he can stay healthy, and Tremble has improved as well.  Just feels like spending high draft picks or cap space on other needs and more important positions is a better use of our resources than splashing on a TE in the draft or FA. Are those guys on the level of the Bowers or McBride's of the world?  Of course not, but we also are paying a fraction of the cost on our TE room than they are, and we're able to use that money for other needs.
