I'm not a fan of this at all. I know they are looking out for the players, but a rule change and/or suspensions will cause all kinds of issues. Stupid Rodney Harrison needs to keep his dumbass mouth shut.

“I thought Cribbs was asleep,” Harrison said. “A hit like that geeks you up, especially when you find out the guy is not really hurt, he’s just sleeping. He’s knocked out but he’s going to be OK.”

"sleeping"????? This was deemed legal but thinking the guy is down and not moving because he's "sleeping" has to stop. No one sleeps in football, jerk. This idiocy needs to stop. Glad there will be suspensions.

And no one is talking about fining that hit.

This would only apply to hits that are deemed to be illegal or deliberately and excessivly injurious.

So you are okay with fining and suspending a player when the recipient of the hit was okay and came back in the game but not fining and suspending a player when they both are knocked unconscious? I think the Jackson hit was more "devastating hit" ( a quote from the article) than the Heap hit but the Heap hit was more deliberate. So based on the NFL, who gets the fine/suspension?

Legal and devastating?

Illegal and not-so-devastating?

What happens when a blitzing corner smashes the blindside of a QB causing a fumble and turning the momentum in a game only to be penalized and suspended in the future? Should the corner run up full speed, stop, then try and pull him to the ground ever so delicately?

They have GOT to put an end to this.

Merriweather launched himself head first into Heaps helmet. Suspend the bitch for a bitch ass move.

The fact is the game moves so fast that once sec your hitting a guy with your shoulder the next your hitting him with your helmet. Now that hit on heap was not called for cause you can see he was defenseless but at the last part of the vid you see the same play and he hits him with his shoulder in the same manor.

If a offensive player leads with his head its not helmet to helmet but if a DB dose it then its a suspension... Thats just crazy. This is becoming like Nascar was for a while. Over protective of everything to the point they are making the game crappy.

One guy dose not speak for the players. I remember harrison ripping off players helmets and crap like that also. He is the SS version of Bill Romanowski. Both are huge turd players if you ask me.

This is crazy. After MNF, even Stuart Scott was speaking his mind on how ridiculous this is. Only Steve Young (go figure) was for it. Him and Millen got into a decent argument and it was the only time I think I've ever agreed with that former-terrible-gm.

I mean, if not a helmet to helmet, define a gruesome type hit? They need more clarity if they want to implement this and not get flack.

edit:

And the thing that ticks me off is that a young QB can be as much as fault if not more for these hits. They are the ones who are leading their receivers into the middle of the field watching the defensive movements and adjustments. They set the whole situation up

The hit on Heap was absoluetely a cheap shot. No doubt. The problem lays in the fact that it starts in pop warner and goes all the way to the NFL. Coaches teaching how to tackle..... 10 years ago helmet to helmet hits were every once in a while, now we are losing 5-6 players a week. No one sees a problem with this?

Now the other part (devestating hit), I don't agree with. That's just football in it's nature.

No Helmet to helmet contact.

Just FYI all these hits are now going to be violations.

Good bye Pro bowl MLBs

Remember guys arm tackles.

Half the league is suspended on this one.

Guess we dont need superstars.

But yet its still ok to cut block a Defenders legs... Cause everyone knows defenders dont need legs right?

Crap, this debate will get as annoying as the Moore/Clausen one any minute now. Half the people here couldn't care less about player safety and just want to be entertained, while the other half cares about safety and half of that half cares but doesn't want the game watered down any more. Then you have the half that don't want players protected but don't want 18 games, then a half that thinks the NFL is ruined now that guys won't be allowed to maim another player, yet cry foul when a player on their team gets hurt. Then you have the half that....

Ah, screw it.

Message boards really are a waste of energy. Maybe I'm just getting mellow in my old age. Arguing is such a waste of time. I just wish I could get myself to stop coming here every day.

You both are so right.

And yet later in that article,

Tomlin appeared to suggest that younger players looking for a role model to copy for physical play might find him in Harrison, who was chosen as an AFC Pro Bowl starter the last three seasons.

Here are some of the reasons why I think this rule stinks.

#1 How do you decided what is too much. Is it just Helmet to Helmet or do you go father and say well any hit that takes a guy out of the game is too much.

#2 The most exciting thing to watch on defense is the big hit. Yes its crude and violent but lets face it people have always loved violence.

#3 We pay big money to see players play at top performance. Can you really say that the defenders are going to do that if they are faced with the gamble that they might get suspended if they go all out. Those guys are out there to earn a check and if they miss a few they are going to change there play.

#4 You dont hear collage players bitching about big hits. Collage QBs leave there WR out to dry way more then NFL QBs do and you dont see Collage getting all worked up about defenders. Those players go out and perform lights out for 4 years and dont get paid a cent.

#5 Deep down I know this is just another attempt by the NFL to make this a 40 point league. People that dont watch much Football love scoring and dont understand defense. Thats why they have protected the QB and WR to the point if a defender so much as touches them its 15 yards and a 1st down. While on the Defensive side of the ball its still fair to cut block a guys legs and clipping is hardly ever called.
