Quick question about when John Fox was hired.

Hey fellas, first post but I've been reading this site for years now. I just had a quick question for you old timers who know a thing or two more about the panthers than I do.

When Fox was hired, I believe I was in middle school and honestly couldn't care less about where the next head coach came from and certainly didn't have any insight on what the organization/ownership preferred in a head coach. So this next hire is kind of like my first time to vote.

My question for you guys is...when John Fox was named head coach, was he on most you your guys' radar or was he kind of a dark horse/"who the hell is this guy" candidate?

If I'm not mistaken he was old friends from way back with Marty Hurney when he was back in San Diego. And it doesn't hurt that he was cheap too. Came in as one of the lowest paid head coaches in the NFL. Seifert was expensive and when they got Seifert they still had to pay Capers a head coaching salary for a few years after Seifert was here, so they were paying two head coaching salaries for awhile.

I remembered Fox as the Giants' DC on a Super Bowl team a few years before the hire. I don't remember hearing a whole lot about the search for a new coach before he was named head coach. I wasn't really sold on him until our 3-0 start the season after a 1-15 embarrassment.

The consensus was Spurrier had the job in the bag. (Was even seen in Charleston SC playing golf with Jon and Mark). To be honest after Seifert, Fox was viewed by most in Panther land as a "shot in the arm". Of course after Seifert anyone would have been an improvement.

i had a lot of other stuff going on then and wasn't able to watch much, if any panthers football at all due to being in arkansas at the time. i do remember being baffled that seifert had done so poorly. i can't say that i was in favor of spurrier.

i liked tony dungy a lot. probably safe to say he was at the top of my list then.

i can honestly say that john fox wasn't on my radar at that point and really never paid attention to him.
