We threw 41 times. The John Fox irony: "Too agressive?".

Do we win many games where we pass for 300 yards or pass for 40 times? Why not? We don't have Brees or Manning at quarterback. Our team is built to run not pass. Until it gets reconstituted otherwise, we need to stick to what we are built to do unless the defense gives us no choice. We ran against the 49ers because they kept stacking the box despite our success throwing the ball.

Yeah but isn't that the point of this season, the WRs we drafted and the entire re-building process? To build a passing threat?

Look we haven't won one game this year by trying to play like we have in the past. Our first win was thanks to the passing game this year. So why should we go back to something that hasn't worked this year when it's clear this team cannot replicated what the Panthers teams of the past have done?

This team is obviously NOT a run-heavy team. Our O-line isn't what it needs to be for that. We should stick to what's worked. And right now, passing for 41 times with Moore got us a W. I say try to do it again.

Moore said it was awesome they got a chance to air it out. I agree... Only shot we got is to air it out until teams ease off our ground attack. Teams are begging for us to abuse them with the deep balls....opponents have been giving us those throws. Moore finally made them pay. Fox has to attack in the air to get teams to change the blueprint

I guess "conservative" is all perception.

O wait...it's you. ;)

Ok, no ruining the football board with political snipes. :)

To me, Conservative offense means running the ball (with a lot of them between the tackles), short passes, with a few long balls thrown in.

Non conservative means more throws on first down, along with more medium and deep throws, along with more outside running along with more reverses and other trick plays.

I guess since they are so quick to jump to the pass game when they don't hit a certain level with their run game, I considered them not conservative. I consider them an even threat with either of their run game OR their pass game. I'd like for us to be as balanced as their attack.

I agree. I want us to continue to try and throw 41 times even if it means we may throw the occasional pick. That's the only way we will ever get good at it.

If we get scared and abandon it after the first pick, and go back to the run game, it will never grow. I liked that we went right back to it after Moore threw that pick in the 4th quarter and went right back to Gettis after he dropped that TD.

Not saying we should stick to passing in a game after like our playoff game were Delhomme was self destructing, or like when Moore threw those back to back interceptions in the red-zone, but we need to give our guys a chance to get some confidence in this by sticking with it more than we have in the past when the season or the game is not on the line.

We have made the same mistake over and over where we depended on the running game so much throughout the season, that we eventually end up facing a situation in a BIG game where we have to rely on our passing game to save us. And then we find out, we never practiced it well enough for us to do that. We need to practice the passing game all the time, just as much as the run and become a BALANCED TEAM.

The teams that are consistent winners in this league and make it far into the post-season are BALANCED TEAMS.

fox thrives on control. he relinquishes that when he allows a lot of passing to go on. he has no trust for his own team or players. his teams will always be limited until he can free his players and coordinators to do their job instead of acting like puppets.

a passing threat, esp. in these increasingly quarterback friendly times, will only really become a threat once it is used liberally and aggressively. you have an offense that passes around 50% of the time and does it effectively, that run game is going to be able to really take off. if you only pass 25% of the time then teams can focus most of their attention on what it is you do most.

the key is having a truly balanced offense. that's something fox just isn't comfortable having. it relies too much on the passing game.

    • Then we had some impressive coaches to finish 8th from worst plus all of our injuries.  Titans and Raiders were pretty bad as well.
    • Agents have been out-negotiating GMs for years. That's why they had to implement the rookie wage scale. Top drafted rookies were basically starting to walk into the NFL as some of the highest paid guys in the league. Take it up in the next CBA. In the meantime, it is what it is. Agents hold the upper hand in these rookie negotiations and they know it. The teams already have a significant unrecoverable investment spent on these draftees in the value of the pick that they spent. Given the rookie wage scale there's not much to negotiate other than guarantees and offset language and once again the agents are kicking the GMs' asses again.
    • Except it's not about the money, it's precedent and teams not wanting to go down that path.  Once you guarantee all the 2nd rounders, then the 3rd rounders will want it, and so on.  If they keep viewing it as say, "well it's only X amount of money" then it's a slippery slope that doesn't end. Then you get Free Agents saying, "well if you're fully guaranteeing the contract of an unproven 57th pick of the draft, you clearly should be fully guaranteeing mine as your big FA signing this offseason" The NFL doesn't work with fully guaranteed contracts under it's current cap model.  If you want to give them out to the true elite of the elite players at impact positions like QB and Edge, then so be it, but there needs to be a line in the sand or it will get real messy.
