Not interested in paying a 30 year old max money. Rather just draft a franchise DE at 8 and draft another guy later.

That’s easier posted in a forum than done.

The same guys we are looking at at 8 may be there at 17

I’d do this yesterday

He's only played in 4-3 and been one of the best DEs. Now he wants the sunset special at 30 years old. I don't see how this made it to random rumor status.

Because on April 25th, he's a millionaire. Whether it's at #8, #18, or #28...he's a first rounder. I will never hate a man for getting his money.

He is probably one now.  Players do come out early for the money, and you can argue that a first round selection makes you rich, but a second contract makes you richer--and the difference between #8 and #28 is a lot.  However, I will bet that 6 QBs go in round 1 next year, so maybe this is the year for him.

I see our situation this way--we need a guy who can get outside at the 9, pin his ears back, and get to the QB.  He should have been working on his hands, his moves, and his strength.  At #8, we do not need to be drafting a player based on "athleticism" or "upside" or "ability."  That is what college was for.  We can't afford to miss.  So if we take Williams, they better be right about him.

We have Clowney, Wonnum, Jones, Barno, Johnson--but this draft is full of players that can pretty much do the same things--bigger, 4-3 types and, in our case, pass rushers who are under performing.  In my view, the players in the first round that might be good fits have baggage (Pearce, Green).  For this reason, I am hoping we wait until round 2 to find the "sweet spot" in edge rushers for the Panthers:

Princely is my favorite, but I am warming up to J. Stewart.

I've been thinking the same thing all along. There is no sure thing pass rusher in this draft (maybe Carter, but he's not projected to be there at #8) but there is a LOT of them that could easily be day 1 starters for us. I'm not sure that talent drops very much from  round 1 to round 2; especially if we trade up to late 30's early 40's range which I could see us doing.

If we stay at #8, I can see us going offense. We have a damn good line, really good RB's (still draft one of each later), and we have Bryce. Get him a weapon. Whether that is Tmac, Golden, or Warren has  already been thoroughly talked about, but I like Warren. I'm sure that you've already told us, but who do you want at 8. No trade backs.

Lotta people are not thinking offense.  I am not, but there are some defensive players later and the offensive players in the first beginning around 8 are going to be good.  Moton's knee situation could change how they look at it.

    • That was a good segment. Watched every minute of it and would highly recommend it to all fans.
    • "So much of what the Panthers are going to do next week isn't dictated by their preference, but by what happens above them. That's another benefit of not getting locked into need. For instance, if you're thinking you want a receiver, seeing five or six of them go off the board and reacting by taking the sixth or seventh off your list instead of the first (or second or third) something else isn't necessarily wise." https://www.panthers.com/news/ask-the-old-guy-back-into-the-weeds-of-the-nfl-draft-bryce-young-charlotte-hornets-mock-draft This is what some don't seem to get, I don't care how many times it is said: You're NOT going to draft an inferior person at one position, just because that position is perceived as, or is in fact, a bigger need. That would basically nullify, or at least lessen, the reason why you set yourself up via free agency to be able to take the BPA/BAP on the board in the first place.  Yes, the process is complex, very much involved and ongoing, but the overall philosophy is not rocket science. You set yourself up in order not to be pigeonholed into taking a lower graded player at the expense of a higher graded one. This is why Morgan, Gantt and countless of others say the same thing. This is why it's just nonsensical to set yourself in a position where you don't have to, but then act like you have to come hell or high water: "Oh, we have to draft [whatever position], and we can't draft [this position]."  I'm good with whatever they do, until proven otherwise, but even then, you have to be mature enough to know that drafting is an imperfect exercise, filled with hits and misses. And, you generally don't know if you've hit, and especially missed, right away. Moreover, like I've said before, sometimes two players--different positions or not--can both be hits on their respective teams, so in that sense, it's not purely about a right or wrong pick as much as it's about putting puzzle pieces together at the time the best way that you know how.  At the end of the day, people are going to believe what they want to believe, but one thing that's true is that what the Panthers do regarding the draft is dependent upon what others do, and what others do can and does change things. That being the case, it's just another reason why you can't go in with tunnel vision. The thought of doing that is preposterous.
