The real reason we need Luck...

DDR

Best player available. We've done well with that strategy over the last couple of years. If that's Luck, then take him.

I tend to agree with this philosophy. If we are at #1 and we don't take the best QB available I think we'd have to be crazy. Clausen IS NOT ever going to be a great NFL QB...he was mediocre in college...he's below average as a pro...he mostly reminds me of how Carr played.

If we trade down, and don't pick Luck, we will have to bring in a veteran starter...

then I think, with 2 First round picks (what we would get to trade down)

we address D-line and CB or WR.

After that we need OL.

But picking Luck with the 1st Pick would be tremendous, as long as he is determined to be the BPA, which I feel he will be. Look...he's clearly better than Bradford and he's not doing too bad (except he's been injured)...

For those of you who are saying that Clausen will never be great, I respectfully disagree. I think he may be, because he has the physical skills, the pedigree, the coaching, and most of all, passion. It's that last word which makes the difference, I had the good fortune to talk to one of the wide receivers, and it's the word they used to justify why he would be great some day--they believe in him.

So if we have the first pick, then we take Luck and showcase Jimmy for a year, then reap the benefits in a trade. Why would we do anything else?

I can't recall who said it, but unless you have a franchaise QB you never pass on one. Who knows if Luck will enter the draft? With the possibility of a looming lockout, do you think he would pull the trigger? Who knows?

Otherwise, who else do you look at in the top 5 slots for franchaise QB? Are they any better than Jimmy? That becomes an interesting question.

Everything hinges on the new Coach, will he be an offensive minded Coach that knows how to develop a QB, or a defensive Coach that needs an NFL ready QB. So we can talk about this QB and that QB all day and for the next 5 months, but the Coach is the bigger question right now.

I would agree that franchise quarterback is essential. The FO has to decide if Clausen is it or not. Because if he isn't, then we have the best chance to draft one that we have had in almost a decade. Whether it is Luck or someone else.

Still to assume a rookie is going to come in here and fix our offensive woes is wishful thinking at best. It will be a start but as others have said we need more talent starting with a right guard, backup center, and tackle depth on both sides. We really need one more receiver assuming Edwards starts producing next year. Other than that the offense should be much better next year.

The defensive line needs help and that is where I would go after picking a franchise quarterback. We need DTs badly and one more DE who can actually pass rush. Then I would go after a shut down corner, yeah, and play more man instead of bend until you break zone. With those changes we could be significantly better next year. It isn't that we don't have talent but that we have holes right now and the team doesn't play well together. Get a few pieces to fill in the holes and a much better defensive coordinator who can get the team playing as a unit, and we could at least be respectable.

What makes you so sure Luck would even come here? Unless Big Cat cleans house (of course BEFORE the draft) and brings in a proven HC and OC top prospects are going to steer clear of this mess.

Been a while since a quarterback draft choice refused to play for a team. He could choose to stay in school of he didn't like the choices but he wouldn't know that next year would be better. I suspect he would rather come here than Buffalo based on the weather and attendance.

Guys go where they are drafted and enjoy the money and pick where they want to go on the second contract.

I'm not gonna comment on who we should draft, but I will say the people who say that we shouldn't draft Green because "We don't need another Receiver" is, well, that's an invalid argument.

Smitty will be gone before we know it, so your basically telling us that your positive that Gettis and LaFell are not only the future at the WR position for us, but they have same level of potential that Green has.

Remember all the arguments about Clausen could be good, but Luck will be great?

You could say the same thing about Green with Gettis/LaFell.

Then again, neither Luck, Green, Clausen, Gettis, LaFell are guaranteed to be good/great.

Of course, all 5 could be as well.

They all have potential.

Frankly, this is a good problem we're having.

I think we are fine with Smitty, Gettis, and LaFell as 1-3 for next year. We don't need to panic and use our first round pick on Green. We can add another WR later on in the Draft or sign a FA. Hell, Julio Jones at Bama is rather special. We have much bigger holes to fill than WR for 2011. There is no pressing need to add Green.

know what kills great quarterbacks? great defenses and great running games.

having a franchise quarterback would be nice - and i'm in support of going after luck - but it's silly to assume we can't compete with other teams without one. there are other components to a winning football team.

For every Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer, there is a Troy Aikman, John Elway, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Drew Brees.

Yep, those are all the QBs who have won Super Bowls since the Panthers have been a team. I'd much rather have a great team led by a great QB who can year after year give you wins, rather than a one-year wonder like the Bucs and Ravens were.

We are fine at WR for 2011, we are fine at RB for 2011 (even if we trade one and get a nice pick), we are fine at LB for 2011, we are fine in the secondary for 2011 (few units are A+ perfect), and we are fine at TE in 2011 (for how we use them).

We're not fine at O-Line, D-Line, QB, and maybe FB for 2011. Some of that can be solved in FA if the FO decides to spend money. Some of that can hopefully be solved in the draft. But the most important key to a great team, who isn't a one-year wonder (lightning in a bottle) like the Ravens, Bucs, and hell even us in 03, is a QB.

Take the risk. Draft Luck.

There is no guarantee that Luck is a franchise qb. Franchise QB's are relative rare. At this point, there are probably about 10 qb's in the league who qualify as franchise qb's. The rest are average or inconsistent.

there is no guarantee that clausen is a franchise QB. there is no guarantee that luck isn't one.

luck's ceiling is much higher than clausen's. if we don't want to have an average or inconsistent QB, then we need to be trying to improve. fortunately we don't have enough invested in clausen that says it would hurt us to draft luck #1 overall.
