If Luck does not declare...

I would be all for trading down if we could. Pick up some more picks, but that just depends on someone falling in love with a top prospect and with a rookie cap I don't think teams will mind picking a corner or defensive tackle number one overall.

By the way, did anyone watch the Stanford game last night? I only got to watch the first half but that was more than enough to fully understand the hype for this kid. He made a throw to the outside that im not sure many starting QB's in the NFL right now could make. If nothing else he is a much better prospect, in every sense of the word, than mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford, or Matthew stafford...and those guys have been pretty successful.

Trading down will not be a possibility if Luck is not there. Let's face it, we are stuck with the #1 pick no matter what. Green/Peterson would be our pick at that point. I highly doubt we take Mallett that high.

fug no. The only way we take a QB is if Luck is on the board. Jake Locker is a fuging bum. I think we'd take the BPA which would either be Green or Peterson.

I agree with you, but when was the last time a draft came around and the top QB in the class (which would probably be Locker) wasn't at least being considered for the top pick?

Mallett is considered a top 10 draft pick. It'd be a tough choice but if Mallett blows you away at the combine and the interviews then you have to take him. He has had a really really good season for Arkansas this year and has all the tools to be really good in the NFL.

That said the only two things that I see keeping Luck at Stanford are:

1 - Lockout

2 - Harbaugh not taking an NFL job

I think Harbaugh is as good as gone and if there is a lockout then we get the #1 pick two years in a row. Take AJ Green this year and take Luck the next year. Couldn't get much better than that.

If only we could be so lucky. I am sure the NFL would figure out a lottery system for the draft picks in 2012 should a lockout kill the regular season.

I read somewhere that if there is a lockout then they will do it by record and it will snake which means we'd have the #1 overall pick and then 64th pick as our second rounder.

If Luck comes out though there is no chance the new coaching staff passes on him. Even if it isn't Jim Harbaugh, Andrew Luck will be our QB if he comes out and here are the reasons.

1. BPA and it just happens to be at the most important position in football. Oh yeah...its also the weakest link on our team. If that isn't enough here are a few more

2. The Panthers have had the worst QB situation in the league for the last 3 years. It is time to get a legitimate franchise QB in here to make us contenders year in and year out. In the past 8 years alone here are the teams that have BANKED on first round QBs

Jets - Sanchez

Falcons - Ryan

Ravens - Flacco

Broncos/Bears - Cutler

Packers - Rodgers

Giants - Manning

Chargers - Rivers

Steelers - Roethlisberger

What is the common factor amongst all of those QBs?? Every one of those teams will probably make the playoffs.

3. There are 3 positions in the NFL that you take with a #1 pick and they are QB, OT, DE. We are set at LT with Gross for at least another 3-4 years and there isn't a DE worthy of the #1 pick.

4. QB prospects that have failed are either immature, weak-armed, or both. Andrew Luck is neither of those things.

5. Jimmy Clausen is not ready and IMO doesn't have the leadership ability to get a bunch of veteran guys to buy into him. Trade him and start over with a better prospect. A lot of teams make picks like us and then don't get a chance to fix it just one year later. Not to mention he is making a 2nd round salary that wouldn't be hard to trade at all.

New head coach will want his own guy. Period.

I also agree with everything you said. Clausen isn't showing us anything super promising. The progress is minimal. With the other first round QB's you listed, those teams saw the potential, capability, and progress that Clausen is not showing. I wanted Clausen to work out, but he simply is not going to be a franchise Qb. Take Luck, and we are set for the next 15 years.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
