Reports are coming out of pft reporting that adam schefter has heard that russ grimm has been internally discussed as being the top choice to replace john fox. He was a coordinator for the steelers for a while, ugh get ready for more of that run first crap.

The PFT article links to a Schefter article on ESPN.com and here's what it says:

1. It is a foregone conclusion that coach John Fox will be leaving the Panthers when his contract expires after this season. And there's already talk centering on one of the candidates to replace him. The Panthers will consider hiring Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm to replace Fox, according to two NFL sources. Grimm is a logical candidate for a multitude of reasons. For starters, Grimm's credentials make him one of the top assistant coaching prospects available. Panthers owner Jerry Richardson also is close to Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, whose team trained Grimm as a coach. When Richardson made his first head-coaching hire, he hired former Steelers defensive coordinator Dom Capers. And Grimm's former head coach with the Washington Redskins, Joe Gibbs, who is popular in NASCAR country in Charlotte, has been pushing Grimm's candidacy. Grimm would not be as pricey as a coach like Bill Cowher, which would make him even more appealing to Richardson. But when the Panthers sift through head-coaching candidates after this season, Grimm is firmly expected to be on or near the top of the list.

This is almost exactly what Schefter said during the MNF game with the only difference being that he's now claiming "sources" have told him there is talk going on. It honestly wouldn't suprise me if Grimm was our next HC, but this is what Schefter does for a living:

1. Create a totally speculative rumor.

2. A few days later, claim "sources" to backup this rumor.

3. Ride it for as long as he can to fill up his on air segments and ESPN.com articles.

It's a win-win for him, it gives him some material to use for a few months and if Grimm isn't hired he can just spin it into another story about how Grimm was passed over and site more "sources".

There's no way to hold guys like Schefter accountable for this stuff, they won't reveal their "sources" so you just have to take their word for it.

Well I hope not I cant take anymore of run on first and second with a draw on third down.

Well, he was the OC of the Cardinals team that threw the crap out of the ball with Warner. Maybe he would prove to be the type of coach that would scheme to the strengths of his team.

Give him a top tier QB and he will run a passing game.

In '01...were there speculations about hiring John Fox before the season was over? Did anyone even hear a whisper of John Fox's name before Seifert got fired?

There was speculation on him and a half-dozen other guys, same as now.

Some of it had merit, some didn't (same as now).

Actual discussion with Grimm right now would be tampering.

It's a possibility he'll be the guy, or at the very least a strong candidate, but no substantive action can be taken right now.

From what I understand, Fox was not at the top of anyones list, but his name was occasionally mentioned by some fans... but I think his hiring took many by surprise.

Weren't we in the running for Spurrier or something like that?

I thought we wanted Tony Dungy

Would discussions with Grimm actually be tampering?

He is a coordinator and may have a clause in his contract that he can discuss and interview for HC jobs even during the season.

Is that correct?

    • A backup that isn't worth playing when they need it is just stupid. 2 years in a row Dalton has shown the adlbility ro be fun for 1 game and then he is washed. Thr fun game isn't great but it's fun at least. He is washed at this point and that fine for him. He had a good career.  I agree about the hail merry type for a number 2 by this point in our peocess. It doesn't even have anything to do with Bryce because he has his own thing and it's his 3rd year. It's just about wasting a valuable roster spot in a spot where healthy guys still miss time. It's just dumb when they aren't a rookie and it's a little suspect in year 2...which it certainly was last year after 1 game and the backup's body broke down again. It was a natural time to let Dalton go into retirement and they did the dumb thing IMO.
    • Holy oxymoron. In all seriousness, I wasn't being serious. I'm familiar with Renfrow enough from seeing him play at Clemson.
    • Not really. Just with you and mrcompletely11.  Even though CRA is not a big believer in the team currently, he at least engages in good faith debate regarding them. Trying to have a rational conversation with you where you don't crash out and start being dismissive is outright impossible, so triggering you with poo emojis and pointing out your Bryce hate is the most effort I'm willing to put in until you figure out how to be a person.😛
