The Saints "dirty" defense...

I had a random thought the other day. I remember during the saints superbowl run everybody was saying that they were a dirty team because they beat up Brett Favre in the playoffs. Greg Williams was classless piece of poo.

But didn't we do that to Donovan McNabb in 2003?

He went down and all that was needed was a touch but instead of that one of our guys dove right into his ribs. It was rucker, favors, or wallace I can't quite remember. It affected the torque behind his throws and eventually took him out of the game. It was one of the biggest stories of the game.

Just wondering what fans would think if Brett Farve fell and Will Smith dove into his ribs.

Rules have drastically changed since 03. I saw something on ESPN a while ago, where it gave insight on those hits the Panthers did. And it explained how they were totally legal. If our corners played today like they did in 03....we would set a record for P.I. calls. Times have changed, and they're were a lot of no calls in that Saints game that should have been called.

That was one late hit on McNabb, the Saints took numerous shots at Farve and Greg Williams spent the whole week leading up to the game talking about how they were going to do that... then this offseason Sharper made an "X marks the spot" comment in relation to Farve's ankle.

thank you very much; that one hit you guys put on McNabb as 100 times worse than any hit we put on ANYONE thru the playoffs.

^^what does that have to do with the saints being dirty? nothing ok, you just wanted to get a shot in, nice.

my point is i'd gladly take a dirty defense that accomplishes something over what we have here. Gary Williams was a great signing and all they've done since they got him is win a super bowl.

NFL is a physical sport, trying to say one team is dirty is a bit of a stretch. All the good defenses get accused of this. No one accuses the defense that can't wrap up or rarely hit qbs as being dirty.

    • So much revisionist history around the pre-draft Bryce hype. The media was practically united in saying that if he were a couple inches taller he'd be the perfect prospect and it was just a question of whether he'd hold up in the NFL being that small. The Panthers did not create the mythos around him they were just the team that bought in. The team was largely praised for the move after and for surrounding him with what was considered an all-star coaching staff at the time.  Yeah part of the fanbase wanted Stroud but let's be real, we're coming from an oversized franchise QB who injured himself out the league. There was some analysis here on the limitations of Bryce's game but people were mostly just concerned he was going to turn into dust when he got sacked in the NFL.
    • Maybe Rod changing his philosophy a little so that stars dont turn into JAGs.
    • I feel like the last 2 years were the best chances to win the Cup under Rod. Especially 2 years ago. Im afraid this year is the start of the decline. You cant last forever with his philosophy which doesnt change and most stars you get by the trade deadline end up being just another guy.  It sucks because he is a master motivator. All he needs to do is make small tweaks like change his coaching staff and actually address the issues this team has had year after year in the playoffs. Not just personnel wise, but strategic wise.
