Fox-guy Sehorn rips Panthers

Former NFL cornerback Jason Sehorn moved to Charlotte recently, but he doesn't have many kind things to say about the local NFL team.

He admits he's prejudiced, as an unabashed John Fox supporter, but he leveled stinging criticism of the Panthers anyway.

"My opinion of that team right now's not very high," Sehorn said during an interview conducted as part of a promotional tour. "When I look at that team and that organization the way they've been run last two years, I don't see a team that's serious about winning. ...

"Right now, the Panthers don't look like a team that wants to make the commitment to win."

Sehorn played for Fox with the New York Giants, and considered joining him here with the Panthers. He said that the main reason he didn't was that he wasn't confident enough in his own abilities to play cornerback, looking for work as a safety instead.

But mostly, he voiced the same frustrations that other Fox supporters have over this season, including the lack of free agent additions or the retention of older players that were part of previous success.

"I know that I'm completely biased," Sehorn said. "But what happened there is tough, because it puts the team in a tough situation. It's hard to go out and compete when you sense there isn't that commitment from ownership.

"Let's face it, the only reason John is still there now is the owner was too cheap to fire him."

Sehorn was promoting a responsible drinking initiative on behalf of Captain Morgan. The liquor company will donate $1 to the First Mate Fund for every fan that uploads a picture of themselves doing the Captain Morgan pose to their Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/CaptainMorganUSA). They hope to raise $1 million to support alcohol awareness and safe-driving initiatives.

"It's the holiday season, and people are going to drink, and we want them to drink responsibly," Sehorn said.

Not a big fan of his but he is saying what everyone outside of the organization has been saying for the past year or two.

When a few people say it you can ignore it, but when everyone is saying the same thing you have to consider that perception could be reality.

i agree. You can consider it regardless. It doesn't matter how many people say it. Still doesn't make them right or wrong.

Right. Just because someone says something doesn't make it so. But when everyone is saying the same thing you have to at least decide either it is a conspiracy or perhaps they are right. And this year most every talking head good or bad has said the same thing. Our record proves there might be something to it as well.

      I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.

      Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it.
